dhorse,
Maybe in your world you are correct but believe me you would be surprised how much Irish is spoken outside your world.

I wholeheartedly agree Hteam. Culann talks the talk, he makes all the right noises, but his actions tell a different story. As breffni pointed out, the tone of his posts are quite different to the spiel he explains them with afterwards. What is this nonsense about the language of the gael? I am a gael, and my language is english. That is the spoken language by 99% of the people of this country, the language that we speak in our daily lives and in the ordinary normal schools up and down the land. We dont have to go to a special school to learn it to a decent level, unlike our antiquated native language. Hardly a ringing endorsement for our actual use of it, as opposed to this pretence of use that so many peddle. Are americans any less american because they dont speak the languages of native americans? This snobbery that has developed around the irish language is really annoying and personally I am embarrassed when I see fellow gaels indulging in it in this type of one-upmanship charade. You can see them think of the sentence in english and then work out what it is in irish before speaking, and for what reason? To be seen to be speaking irish.
You see the truth is I know many people who have irish as their first language, and they dont force it on you for a second. When you meet them for the first time they will say 'gaeilge?' you say no and that is it, they talk to you in english. They never mention it again. Now compare that with the nonsense on here. It is poles apart.

Culann
So by this sort of reasoning are you suggesting that everybody should stop speaking Irish becuase they can also speak English and because English is the majority language?

If that is what I meant then wouldnt I have said that? The purpose of the site is to voice opinions on various sporting matters and hear other ones. On what planet is reducing the number of opinions available by speaking in a second language that 95% of posters will struggle with serving that purpose? Why not speak in Latin? The language of the majority religion. It is part of our culture too isnt it?
