Section for discussion as Gaeilge on Hogan Stand?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I thought this piece that was in an article on the front page of Hogan Stand today was relevent to this thread:

Gaelic Football (Peil Ghaelach), more than just a sport, a spirit ,a symbol of Irish History, the soul of a People.

"Those who play its games, those who organise its activities and those who control its destinies see in the G.A.A. a means of consolidating our Irish identity. The games to them are more than games - they have a national significance - and the promotion of native pastimes becomes a part of the full national ideal, which envisages the speaking of our own language, music and dances."
Extract from the introduction of the Official Guide published by the GAA - Croke Park, Dublin (03/06/2011)

As a GAA man this would be how I'd hope our great sporting organisation could be and this would be the kind of roll I would try to foster among young people in the organisation. Any thoughts?

It's very "comely maidens dancing at the crossroads" stuff.

Irish people have a habit of rejecting compulsion.
-------------------------------------------------------------
True enough, but they also have a tendency to be pushed out of things a bit too easily. No little group or cabal own the language, in spite of what they or others might think. If any of us want to use the language, in whatever way we want (even if its just for a giggle), we can. We don't need the imprematur of any self appointed group to do so.

it's the classic fascist philsosophy, if you dont agree with any aspect of their policy you are automaticaly an enemy and put up as an example of what needs to be silenced.

That must be why they have foreign music gigs and games in Croke park. dont taske it too serously, it's just a sop to the fundamentalists.

I'd agree with a lot of what you are saying there dhorse but i'd imagine we are looking at from different sides hence i said the following

''As a GAA man this would be how I'd hope our great sporting organisation could be and this would be the kind of roll I would try to foster among young people in the organisation.''

The emphasis here is obviously on the 'i'd hope'.

I suppose it does when you think about it but is that a bad thing? After all it is the Gaelic Athletic Association and that image sums things 'Irish'.

Well it's obviously because by your very own standards you wouldn't be a true "gael" if you can't and would instantly lose your self-appointed high horse status.

Spotted the "myster" for "meister" boo boo myself but didn't want to appear pedantic, on second thoughts you're dead right for pointing it out to Culann the omnipotent. Deserves it actually. Here was me thinking he actually did know everything. Are you just toying with everyone Culann? Making dogfood of their arguments? You'll have to explain to the mere mortals I'm afraid, not everyone on your level as you claimed!!!!! This Irish language drive goes from strength to strength!!!!

your misnaming/condescending replies actually make your points less relevant, try and address the issues on their own merits and see how they run.

It must be a very false image so, there maybe far too many crossroads at the present time

It made me very sad this morning to learn that a thread by me as Gaeilge (and the second one in the last two or three weeks) was not permitted due to complaints made by posters on this site due to the fact that there were too many threads as Gaeilge. I'd say that less than 3% of the threads on this site are as Gaeilge. I cannot for the life of me understand why many Irish people have a problem with the Irish language especially people who see themselves as Gaeil. I think people should be more tolerent. Just ignore it if you don't like it. Its not going to hurt.

I wonder what these people thought of the great commentators Ó hEithir and Ó Muircheartaigh when they regulary spoke Irish in their commentries. I wonder what they thought of the great hurling and football speaches given by Ó Conghaile and by Ó hAilpín and by Ó Sé and Ó Cinnéide. I wonder what these people think of the founders of our great sporting organisation who intended that all things Irish be cherished and promoted within the organistation with the Irish language at the core. I wonder what these people think of the services given to GAA supporters by TG4.

I have to admit I didn't expect this sort of bad reaction to Gaeilge on this site but I understand that democracy is democracy and obviously the reaction must have been huge to merit not permitting too many threads as Gaeilge. Again, it was for these reasons that I proposed that maybe an Irish language section would be appropriate.
