Meath v Carlow

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'd say COR would have thrived on having a no square ball rule in open play. With most teams putting results way ahead of playing purist football, it would be mad not to use this new rule to your best advantage. It's not all about a target man punching balls to the net, although the taller and braver the forward, the more successful tactic it can become. It also gives a target man license to position himself under a high ball without having to make a run (pass a certain point) with precision timing and to absolute perfection. He may knock it down to a team mate hovering for a goal scoring opportunity, he may force the full back to punch rather than catch (ala Kevin Reilly) but if you have mobile pacy forwards who can react quickly, it presents more opportunities for scores. So long as it is one of many tactics going forward, not the entire gameplan where it becomes predictable.

Please clarify: Isn't the new rule regarding a square ball in open play insist that a player is outside the small square when the ball is kicked. Just that he can arrive inside the SS before the ball arrives. So it's not like a player can lodge (for want of a better word) next to the goalie well in advance.

And lets face it (since the old rules applies to dead balls), but in open play now as in the past, the only time a player is really ever in the small square is because they are chasing after the ball or supporting a ball carrier, while anticipating the balls imminent arrival, not merely lodging in the hope a ball eventually arrives there.

I am hearing that Graham Reilly suffered a hamstring injury on Tuesday night. It is being kept quiet, not successfully obviously, and he is unlikely to feature against Carlow.

The rule you mention was in place temporarily in the league of '10 or '11 not sure. The new rule has NO restrictions in open play. So yes you can in fact elect to 'mark' the goalie if you wish. Took me more than a week or 2 to grasp also. Seems extreme but there is no squareball rule at all for open play but tackling the goalie in the small square is still illegal I think

Rath Togh ... I was basing things on this ... which to my mind reads that players cannot lodge in small square before the final pass is made. Is the wording below the absolute final draft or were there any amendments. What do you think?

The following Playing Rule changes which were passed at Congress on 14 April 2012 and are to be be implemented in Football competitions from 14 May.
Football Only - "Square Ball"

This has been amended to allow a player enter the small rectangle once the final deliberate play of the ball has been made, i.e as soon as the player kicks, hand-passes, fist passes or deliberately flicks the ball into the small rectangle then the attacking player may enter.
The rule is unchanged with regard to "Set Play" i.e. Free Kicks, Line Balls and 45s - in these instances players are not permitted to enter the small rectangle before the ball.

The formal text of the new rule is as follows .

Rule 4.9 Official Guide Part 2 - Rules of Foul Play - Rule 4 Technical Fouls:
"For an attacking player to enter opponents' small rectangle:
(a) During Play (excluding Set Play), before the final play of the ball into the small rectangle

(b) In Set Play, before the ball enters the small rectangle.

Exception:
(i) If an attacking player legally enters the small rectangle, and the ball is played from that area but is returned before the attacking player has time to leave the area, provided he does not play the ball or interfere with the defence, a foul is not committed.

(ii) When a point is scored from outside the small rectangle and the ball is sufficiently high to be out of reach of all players, the score shall be allowed even though an attacking player may have been, otherwise illegally, within the small rectangle before the ball - provided that the player in question does not interfere with the defence."

GlasagusOr, you're correct as far as I know. The new square ball states that, in open play (ie not from a free kick, sideline ball or 45), a player can't be in the small rectangle before the ball is kicked. From a set piece, the rule is as it was last year. So technically a player cannot simply stand next to the keeper in the small square, but he could linger around the small square and challenge the goalkeeper for possession as soon as the ball is played in.
So there is a square ball rule from open play, it's just not as strict as it is from set plays.

Interesting to see what way that team will line-out. Very surprised that Gilsenan isn't in and it's surely last chance saloon for Cian Ward.. I would go with Tobin and Keoghan at corner back and McAnarney at 7

if gilsenan isn't right yet probably getting closer to our stronger team each week, bray adds a different dimension and the supply of ball going into joe and farrell will be better, one thing i would say is i would have thought collins would have gotten another run out especially against a team where, no disrespect, he can get on the ball and influence it better, players like farrell and ward shouldn't be needed to beat carlow.

1. Gallagher

2. Tobin 2. K. reilly 3. S. Mcanarney

4. Burke 5. Menton 5. D. Keogan

8. Gillespie 9. G. Reilly

10. Meade

11. Bray 12. Forde

13. Ward

14. Sheridan 15. Farrell

id say we will line up the same, this really is last chance territory for cian, he has all the ability to play in this position between lines and take his man to the cleaners and create and link, i think tis right to give him another go here as if he can find his form then this forward system has the potential to put up match winning scores vs anyone on their day. Just hope we see Collins, Brian Sheridan and Eoin Harrington come on and get game time as they all have big roles to play i think

I don't like the idea of Menton corner back and Mc centre back. Better teams will just run through us here..

Cian Ward will have to start producing the goods, he hasn't been delivering in recent games. Quite suprised Gilsenan isn't included, is he fit?

It was said earlier that it is an all ticket event. however, there could be a ticket van around the venue on matchday, Do not hold me to that tho.

1181957 To be honest lads, I dont envisage a whole lot of changes for the nest day. Think Keoghan will start for the injured Kenny, I also imagine Collins to be dropped for either Bray or Paddy Gilsenan. Be surprised if Banty makes many more changes to the team. The wicklow management were somewhat naive to allow Graham Reilly to be marked by a midfielder and leave Meade on a smaller half back, I cannot see another team falling for this trick as it was the deciding factor of the game, with both our guys having close to their best performances in the green and gold.
Good stroke to pull by management all the same, wicklow didnt see it coming at all, and was so refreshing to see a midfielder running with the ball for a change.
I stand by the above!!
