What team will choke in 2012??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Yes Jackeen I can, Dublin (hunger/desire) Tyrone (not good enough, yet) and Kerry are under pressure to make up for handing Dublin the AI, or did they? Top players just past their best!

Well apparently Mayo choke every time we lose a game so I'd imagine we'll choke at least once this year.

In my opinion chocking is when a team doesn't play to their potential and throws in the towel without putting up a fight. If a team gets beaten while trying their best then they can't be accused of chocking, simple as that.

Look, the thread is aimed at any team who doesn't go as far as they thought they would, end of!

Surely Meath have won that gong already in 2012. Joint top after two league games and ended up relegated.

But if its championship you're talking about, like another poster here, you'd need a crystal ball. I suppose whoever is 3/4 points up with a few minute sleft who happen to lose a game could be considered chokers? Or unlucky? Or not good enough?

But IMO this does not make them chokers!! We choked in 2010 semi v cork losing an 8 point lead. We didn't know how to kill a game off. I don't think Kerry choked last year I think they got tired and sloppy and we punished them and if you say Tyrone aren't good enough yet that means they're not good enough yet not that they are chokers. Very few teams choke IMO.

Jackeen, read my other post above regarding the "perception! of the meaning of this thread, I'm not talking about the same type of choking. A vague enough thread, causing some confusion obviously!

Well the most vulnerable to choking this season has to be Kildare, through no real fault of their own the media has told them that they are heavyweights of Gaelic Football (Jason Sherlock's words to be exact) and that basically they have to win Leinster this year. Now I think they are more than capable of winning Leinster but a lot of pundits (at least half that I've read) are tipping them to win it and hence making them favourites, now I'm sorry but the reigning AI champions surely have to take the favourites tag.

Paddy Power says so, of course they're favs, Dubs 8/11, Kildare 9/4, the field... 1000/1.

Nevermind PP, I wonder what odds you would have gotten on Chelsea to win the CL when it was down to the last 16, plus we're 1/3 to beat Wicklow who themselves are a great price at 3/1, so they don't always get it right. My point is that I've seen a lot of journalists heap praise on and hence heap pressure on Kildare to win Leinster this season and I don't think it's fair to be honest, it's all a bunch of hype and what is it really based on?

Haha man that's the one!

In fairness no-one really "chokes". It's an overused cliché thrown around instead of any real analysis of a game.

For example, Dublin will probably get knocked out at some stage in the Championship this summer (history shows how difficult it is to defend the All-Ireland) and when they do there will be those in the media and on here who will come out with the line that Dublin have choked under the pressure on being All-Ireland champions. It's a certainty to happen.

Kildare will get the same treatment this year too when they get knocked out (their a good side alright but they more than likely won't go all the way) and the line will be trotted out in the media and here (I'm looking at the lad in the Towers shirt here!!!) that they've bottled it or choked under the pressure etc.

A whole host of teams will supposedly "choke" this summer according to the experts but in reality they'll just have been beaten by the better team on the day!!

@htaem The hype is based on nothing but media. People read papers are naturally are influenced by it. It happens us all.

@Mesamis I temd to agree. In all seriousness its probably unfair to call any team chokers. No team or players go outs on championship day to play badly. Things don't go right on the day for whatever reason.

Really Lilypad? handing the Ai to us, how generous of them. So you wouldn't say hunger/desire won it for the dubs or is that just reserved for Kildare as it was patented by McGeeney (and perfected by the mighty lilies)?

Mayo are the chokers surely, they play great football up unitl they have to travel east to Croke Park then the choking begins. The big City Lights, the fast cars, the multitude of ethnic minority's and the availability of electricity and clean running water causes Mayo people to get nervous. Even the fans all look as green as their Jersey when they are seated in Croke Park, nervously watching their team throw it all away again.

imo id say mayo and kildare alot of pressure for mayo too go further this year and probably kildare also alot of pressure on them to win leinster and then go well in the championship..

Not an ounce of pressure on Mayo, not a lot of expectation either, its been a case of reality in Mayo, we know we cant deliver Sam with the present team and thats no big deal as we're over sixty years in this category.

Mayo are a county thats ambitions lie with provincial success and maybe the odd big win in croker against a big gun.

Sam dont do Mayo and mayo dont do sam, sin e.
