20 euro isn't a lot for a championship game.

Was it Crocke Park that invested money in the Dublin hurling or the Dublin County Board. I remember Nickey English was head hunted about ten years ago to promote hurling in Dublin through coaching but I can't remember was he appointed by Croke Park or by the Dublin County Board.

It was the DCB that's invested in Dublin hurling.

This weekend will see a improvement I hope. I'd say 15k+ will turn up in dr cullen pk in carlow for meath v wicklow. Wicklow will bring a lot of support hopefully 5-7k meath despite been in doldrums are one of the best supported teams in the country and should bring 8-9k. I would hope so anyway I may be wrong but I hope not.
What I can't understand is that meath are playing wicklow in christy ring semi on sat. I really can't understand why this is not moved to form a double header. Now ok wicklow have one or two dual players but I am sure they will have to opt for one or other as surely 24hrs break will not be enough. I also know its a different competition but how good would it be for both hurlers to play infront of a crowd they could only dream of? A great opportunity to promote hurling to a wider population in weaker counties.

Great point royaldunne, would be a bit boost to the hurlers.looking forward to the game on sunday from a neutral perspective, shold be cloes but a ireckon Meath will pull through, only just though. The atmosphere will be great,as will be a good crowd and pitch is tight.

5600 is a very good attendence louthgael considering laois brought nobody...like what are you comparing it to?..what did you expect??..your speaking as someone who doesn't understand how small a population longford has...

Say about 5000 of the fans at the Longford game were from Longford, for a county with a population of 39000 (according to the census) that's not bad at all. Thats the equivalent of Dublin bringing 162000 fans to a game, whereas they usually bring at most a quarter of that to Leinster quarter finals/qualifier games etc.

I cant help wondering if the GAA has ever thought about the supporters and what is an expensive day out and how to make it cheaper for supporters. A perfect example of this will be next weekend for Wexford supporters.
We play Offaly in hurling in Tullamore on Saturday week (home-away as usual with Offaly), and then the footballers play Longford in Croke Park (neutral venue presumably) the next day. Now I dont know, but the logical thing to do would be to play these 2 games as a double header in Tullamore on the Saturday evening? The GAA will get a smaller crowd having the 2 games on seperately than they would if they played them together. Some of us in Wexford like to support both teams, but to expect us to fork out 2 days in a row, when there was a perfect opportunity to play them both as a double header,is simply a joke.

i don't know if they would let 15 or 16k into Dr. Cullen Park not that I think there will be more than 10k. Meath v Wexford 2008, the place was fairly packed and the attendance was given at just over 10k. Would be a tight squeeze if another 5k turned up. Meath will bring at least 5 or 6k so it's up to wicklow to bring the rest and i'm sure they will as it's only a short spin for them compared to the 2 plus hours I will be driving for.

We were faced with an almost identical prospect during the league perfect10, we were playing offaly hurlers in Tullamore and Offaly footballers in Wexford Park on the same day, or something like that - ridiculous scenario.

What you're saying above smacks so much common sense. Unfortunately the thing common sense is that it's not all that common in GAA HQ or so it would seem.

Down v London at Newry this Sunday is a good place to be - two outstanding hurlers to be seen, Paul Braniff and Martin Finn, 8th and 15th respectively in the all time championship scoring stats, according to L O'Dare in his Amazon Kindle GAA stats books.

Can't see Meath and Wicklow getting anywhere near 15'000. I'd be surprised if there was over 10'000 at it.

How could Meath V Wicklow (a first round game) be played the same day as Kildare V Offaly, which is a quarter final? Whoever wins the Meath/Wicklow game is playing a again a week before the Kildare game anyway.

sure whoever losses would have a longer wait till the qualifiers anyway

Gigoer/Perfect10, I wondered the same alright, what a joke to be honest. If it was a qualifier or the like which was only fixed 6 days before I could understand, but how on earth they couldnt play the 2 of them in the same venue given they have had 3 months to sort out the fixtures is simply beyond me.

Moomoo, that's a really stupid and gratuitous point you are making. You'd almost imagine that there were lads in suits driving around Dublin handing out bags of money!

As for your comparison with Kerry. In 2005 we beat you in the Division Two final. ALL of the curent Dublin senior panel were already hurling in 2005 at some level or other, including one or two who were on that panel. So did something magical take place in the intervening seven years?

No. What happened was that we continued to put in the time and the effort in and it is paying dividends. Yes, there are full time coaches but it is the voluntary work on the ground and the fact that hurling is the popular choice of thousands of kids that is making the difference not the money. For every paid coach there are dozens of volunteers who give up thousands of hours every year to promote hurling. That's the difference. Not money. If the enthusiasm was not there the coaches would be talking to empty rooms and empty practise fields.
