Crowd Attendance

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

i think 12,000 was a decent turnout. it was the highest of the 4 games and to be fair neither team have a hope of lifting sam.

Its unfair to discuss Cork attendance without putting it in context. Yes they have a sizable population, but how many trips to Dublin, not to mention Thurles, can you expect supporters to make? When considering the potential for 5 more games to be played at Croke Park between the hurlers and the footballers, its reasonable to see folks passing on this Saturday. How many, inside that large population, have the means to attend that many games at the cost associated with it? If you have to pick and choose, wouldn't Saturday be the day you sit out?

There will be at least 20,000 from Kildare at Croker on Sunday.

Yes but you have 500,000 people living in Cork! There is no excuse for the support your footballers get and it's just as bad when they play in munster for the league or munster championship.

Donegal and Kerry is on at 4pm because it's the bigger fixture in the public's eyes. if there was more than 12,000 at your game than there was more than 9000 at the meath game and likewise for the others. i still think the 12,000 figure is accurate though.

13,000 at Sligo/KIldare game probably would have got the 17000 easy had the weather not been as bad at the start of the day . I would be expecting just under 20,000 kildare supporters for kildare at the weekend seeing as this will most likely be our last outing

No betty the donegal v kerry game is on at 4pm as it is seen as the more interesting tie of the quarter finals and im glad its on after us instead of saturday.

Also glad now we are not on the same day as dublin now the hill is open which gives people the chance to go with the cheaper option..
Expect a good crowd from kildare there alright cant wait!!

the kilkenny turnout was shocking by the looks of it. i'd much rather be from a county like cork or tipp than kilkenny.

I'd swap All-Ireland titles for supporters any day. If I was the only Wexford man there watching them win an All-Ireland, I wouldnt give a hoot.

Expecting 5 thousand from a county with a population that size is a poor average compared to some other counties, regardless of whatever terms you apply to it.
nothing personal

You are probably right when looking at it in those terms. In those terms we could say Leitrim have the best GAA supporters in the country. We could say Dublin have the worst, followed by Antrim with Cork and Down up next. We could say that Leitrim probably have the best hockey supporters in the country too when looking at one simple independent variable to explain crowd attendance. Reasoning is crucial, however, to a rational debate. We could list many factors that determine attendance at a GAA match (people have mentioned frequency of the games, cost of attendance, predictability of results and consequential lack of excitement with Kilkenny supporters and there are many more). I took a rather simplistic point of view and did a rough calculation of those that belong to the GAA community. I found that the support was actually very good for the hurlers.

I don't take it personally. I don't care. I will be one of the people abstaining again next weekend due to club and other commitments. It is on TV anyway. I will also watch the Laois v Dublin game on Saturday hopefully. Best of luck.

I would hate to support Kerry now to be honest. Hardly a soul in Croke Park, I'd say half of them live around dublin anyway. same with cork. Much rather be from a county like kildare, meath, dublin, donegal, tyrone where there is a actual a bit of buzz about the team.

donegal are by far the best fans in ireland, there were more in croker today than there were dubs yesterday. as for kildare there were about 4 times less and there's a load of them on their page saying there by dar the best fans! 3-4 hour drive and all plus half the county is working abroad.

Donegal have good support but if they were to get very successful i bet their numbers would start to drop off also.

Your right, some people have other commitments. like playing and coaching the actual games - not that they matter around here.

After the disappointment (for me) of the Kildare/Cork match I was delighted to see Donegal win, not that I have anything against Kerry. The Donegal crowd were magnificent and brought great colour and atmosphere to the day. Considering the distance the Donegal supporters had to travel great credit to them for turning out in such numbers.

they had great support yesterday donegal agreed but where have they been all year? you cannot say one county is the best supporters because they turn up for one big match as it was the same last year they had big support against dublin and yet all their other matches in ulster had small crowds.
sunday afternoon matches are always going to have bigger crowds especialy when they are the two big games of the weekend.
on saturday their was only a handfull from laois and mayo in croker were was basicaly all dublin and down.id say about 45 thousand dublin and 5 thousand down and 2 thousand from the others and in fairness on mayo was ahorrible time to have an all ireland quarter final 5pm on a saturday.
the gaa should have played mayo v down at 2pm and donegal v kerry at 4pm on sunday
cork v kildare at 2pm and dublin v laois at 4pm on monday, they would have had far bigger crowds both days if this was the case

hill16no1fan what are you on about? Donegal have had great support at every game this year. Infact the Ulster Championships attendances were overall improved this year.

there was only 12 thousand at donegal v cavan and 11 thousand at donegal v derry and 17 thousand at donegal v tyrone
and their league matches had small crowds aswell so what im saying is there well able to get the support but seems to be only for the big games like dublin last year and kerry this year

those are pretty good crowds hill considering the size of the counties involved and the stage of the championship so i dont quite understand your point?

im not saying they dont have good support but to suggest they have the best support in the country like the poster who i relied to first did is way off.
also my point on their earlier crowds was to show they can get 20 thousand to croke park for the bigger matches which is further to travel to then their own home ground for other matches

they clearly are. dublin have half the country and only have to stroll down the road to get to the game. you couldn't even fill the hill or come close to filling it. and in terms of revenue virtually all the donegal fans were paying higher prices to sit down. half the dubs always go to the hill.

anyway they have 3-4 hours to drive thousands of them fly home from britain for these games and might explain why they don't go to many of the others. it's the worst hit county by the recession and they put other counties to shame including meath, kildare, dublin with the size of their support. i also find their games to be way more exciting than dublins. maybe your huge fall in numbers is to do with gilroy playing that boring version of puke football unlike donegals total football version of it.
