1177036 i thought nearly 13000 in the hyse yesterday was a poor crowd! If this game was 10 years ago there would have been twice that! Ticket prices were high, 25 for stand, 20 for terrace.
--------------------- 2006,2008 Galway v Roscommon games had a crowd of 11000 so the crowd for up for this game but your right the ticket prices are keeping fans away & that big screen with loud music will turn more away.

While attendances at all games the weekend were bad leinster was particularly awful. 5600 for longford v laois is dreadfull. The stadium only holds 11-12000 and with Longford run this year in the league I would have expected this game to be sold out likewise with the Louth v Wesmeath game with Navan's capacity greatly reduced. Both teams had above expected league campaigns yet they could only manage 7-8000. The same teams drew a crowd of over 14000 for a qualifier game at the same venue in 2002. Empty terraces look awful especially when the game is being televised. The GAA should have done everything possible to make sure hyde park was pack as this game was the first game of the championship. They could have offered free in to the terraces behind the goal for the first 500 at either end. Had they done this we would have been looking at cheering fans every time there was a score and not the ball bouncing aroumd an empty terrace.

I agree with you there. Free in for Juveniles, schools, underage clubs and so on and fill the terrace behing the goals with them. They'll bring plenty of flags and colour to it aswell.
I noticed in saturdays star that there was a coupon inside the front page for 50% discount to any of the games on sunday when buying your ticket.
So an adult can go to a Senior championship match for €5. Cant really argue with that, but it wasnt really advertised. I know I didnt hear or see of it on TV or radio and it was only yesterday when I noticed the paper in someones house that I seen this offer.

It was only a fiver off Jinxie. Its a great idea though. I bought the star especially because of it. I intended on going to Pairc Tailteann but things didn't work out. It killed me having to buy the star and then not using the voucher!

Jinxie I didn't see that advertised myself but it sounds like a good idea. The game in Navan was only 10euro for adults anyway so I don't think anyone could complain about the price. Another thing I noticed from being at games is that RTE seem to always pick the side were the crowd is to mount their cameras meaning the footage will show the empty side of the stadium. The empty terrace even occurs in Croke Park with 50'000 thousand fans. This one really annoys me, 50'000 fans but because they are not dubs only one section of the hill is open meaning that every time there is a score at the hill end we see an empty terrace. It is obvious that they don't open the whole hill because the stand seats are more expensive but they should realise how bad this looks on TV.
Hill16 of that 7'000 in Navan I'd reckon we brought 5'000 and now that the bandwagon is up and running we could bring anything from the 10'000 to 15'000 to Croke Park.

I think the earlier suggestion of county boards organising buses is a great idea, particularly given the petrol costs of driving distance to games. Perhaps some discount on admission could be woven into that.
And I would agree €25 is a lot for an opening game like this when there are many games to follow. Yes, we all appreciate the GAA prices haven't dropped in years but is that enough in these tough times?
5,600 could easily have been 10 or 11,000 if the ticket price were €10 terrace and €15 stand, no?

I was in Navan with the young lad on Sunday and have to say that at a tenner in and children free, it's good value for money. That said, there was a very poor crowd there - I'd say that there was more at the league game against Meath.
Unfortunately, I don't think this situation is going to change a whole lot as people just don't have the money at the moment. Just seen the prices for the next round in Croker and it's 25 for an adult and 5 for children so you're looking at 60 quid for myself and my wife plus our two lads. That's before you include the cost of petrol and a bit of food. I know that you get 2 games for that and I will get there for the first game but it's an expensive day out.
I can see the qualifiers suffering even more. Admission is reasonable for them but people just won't make the longer journeys.
I'm also wondering if people are getting a bit fatigued with the provincial system, especially followers of the so-called weaker teams. Take Louth for example, we start off with yet another game against Westmeath and the reward for winning is a trip to Croker against the Dubs and almost-certain defeat followed by a wait of 4 weeks for the qualifiers. Westmeath were very unlucky not to beat Louth but now have to wait 5 or 6 weeks for their qualifier game. In the meantime, Euro 2012 will have been and gone and the Olympics will be on our screens!
I really think that it's a marketing disaster and there is a complete lack of momentum for these counties. I know that my own young lad really enjoys the league as there is a bit of momentum to having a game every week or two. Looking at the fixtures here, Louth play Dublin on the 3rd June and the qualifiers aren't until the 30th so I am sure that the Euros will have captured his imagination in between..

Slowly but surely the money men have taken over the GAA.
The first big change was TV Coverage of live games. This has been a big money spinner but it has elongated the championship to the detriment of club games and club players.
The qualifiers have further discomoded the clubs .
Dublin hurling gets massive investment and Wexford, Laois, and others do not. Is that to get bums on seats and there are lots of dubs there?
When money becomes the be all and end all then decisions are usually made that are not in the best interests of the general membership.

The people who attended the Donegal match were ripped off. They payed in to see Gaelic football not rugby league.

Till money was put into Dublin hurling they were the same as the likes of Laois and Kerry and others had no real success. So the GAA deside they want to ''promote'' hurling in Dublin and invest huge money in it wile other countys that were at the same level as Dublin get nothing. Who are the GAA really looking out for hear?

Imagine that, who'd have thought the GAA would want to promote hurling in the capital and who'd have believed that poor moomoo was agin it!

Was it Crocke Park that invested money in the Dublin hurling or the Dublin County Board. I remember Nickey English was head hunted about ten years ago to promote hurling in Dublin through coaching but I can't remember was he appointed by Croke Park or by the Dublin County Board.

You can't really think 5600 is a good crowd. After the league campaign you have had and the fact that you're the only county unbeaten. Even if not one person from Laois turned up it is still a poor crowd. The media bigged up Longford in the build up saying they might make history by beating Laois, this will probably be Longfords biggest win of the year and could be their biggest win for years to come. I'm not just criticising Longford fans but if we start to claim 5600 for a championship clash is a decent crowd then we really have lost.
