Let us hope that was the case with Carlow minors. It does happen occasionally at that level, you are right there.

I read that Carlow were annoyed at the way that fixture was re-jigged. Westmeath were strong last year so I'm sure they can't have been too shabby this year?

Do you know anything about the Meath minor hurlers this year? They lost to Offaly by two points a few weeks back. I was reading the short preview of the game on the Indo and whoever wrote the column actually predicted that Meath would win. Were they saying that because they felt that Meath had improved a lot or because they felt that Offaly had regressed a lot? I would not know. As I said Laois performance against Wexford will tell us a lot about where teams stand given that Laois only beat Offaly by a point.

How are things going in Longford now? Do you have a minor team in the B or C competition?

Offaly are producing shockingly bad minor teams considering their standard while other leinster counties seem to be stepping it up a bit. While it is a better than usual laois minor team, their usual standard is poor.

Would be great to see Wexford or Waterford winning an All Ireland at this level.

Meath seem to be putting an effort into underage hurling again alright, although I wouldn't know too much about it. No county minor team here. Clonguish are strong at that age group but won't take up the mantle til the football is out of the way. We have a county U-16 squad competing in Div 1 of the Westmeath league but it's mostly made up of Slashers & Wolfe Tones playere.

We better tell them something they don't know tommies!

Everyone expects Galway to be strong every single year at minor level.. no point us telling them something they automatically know.

Lads Offaly were beaten by 2 late points by Wexford in first game after leading for long spells, fair enough Meath ran us close, and Laois beat us with a goal from the last puck of the game after a real nip and tuck battle. Wexford went on to beat Dublin, so Offaly were not as far off the mark as people seem to think here.

Exactly. It is a typically Irish thing, if you lose by even the smallest margin, it must be because you are rubbish. It can never be because the team that you have played have improved or were good. Either Wexford or Laois will go onto play in an All-Ireland quarter final at least. They both only narrowly beat Offaly (so essentially it could be Offaly that were in that All-Ireland quarter if they had a bit of luck) but because they only lost by one score, it follows naturally that Offaly hurling is in the doldrums and they will never ever improve.

Galway will be quite strong again. Many central players from last years team are under age again, and quite a few panelists from last year are there again too.

That's a bold prediction in relation to Loch Gorman. Don't think many of my own county men would have the confidence to throw ourselves into the mix with the cats and yourselves. Hope your optimism in my countys team is right.

Your right, the only thing certain at this age level is the uncertainty and inconsistency, the only "certainty" is Galway wil make the Semi's the other three spots are anyones.

I've heard good things about the Wexford minor hurlers this year. Keep the faith man, you never know.

I seen our minors v Dublin. They were good, but I couldnt be convinced as yet. There is a part of me which thinks they are good enough, but we've talked several minor teams up in the last few years and they have not delivered, even though all have been very close to KK and Dublin. These lads seem to be good and seem to be going about business quietly, which is the best way to go about it. So I think there is cautious optimism in Wexford but suppose were trying to keep a lid on expectation.
Thats not me being pessimistic. I am about as optimistic as they come that what were doing at underage is going to bear results at some stage, were now competitive with the top counties again which is testament to the work that has gone on and is continuing to go on, but too much optimism has disastrous results and we know all about that in Wexford, which is why I think Nick is reluctant to talk them up as well.
But I hope your right though because by god we need it!

Pinkie, good post. Personally I'd love to see Wexford make a breakthrough at minor level this year, even (almost..) at my own county expense.

Best of luck.
