Incredible song thing , Good ring to it.

But more importantly , you can really see all the scences in the song in your head.

This is a great Wexford song, about the famous Nicky Rackard.(Ignore the first minute or so of the video).Undoubtedly our best GAA song.
It was written and made famous by the late Martin Codd, who would I am almost sure be a grand-uncle of Paul Codd.
Having grown up with stories about the Rackards of the 1950's from my father and grandmother,I always wonder what it was like going to matches back then, everyone wearing their suit and the like.I doubt you will ever see sportsmanship taken to the level that Nick O'Donnell and Bobby Rackard did when they carried Christy Ring off the pitch after he had beaten them in an All-Ireland final.
It's sad to see Wexford hurling in it's current state given the men of the 1950's did to put it on the map.
If anyone has Martin Codd's original,it'd be great if you could post it.

There were a couple of good Dublin ones in the 70s but cannot find any link.

For the '74 Final I think the song was called 'Heffo's Hero's'..........let the Railway end go barmy for Hill 16 has never seen the like's of Heffo's Army

Other one cannot remember the name but had the immortal line ' 14 on 14 off Jimmy on the sideline having a gaak'...................after Jimmy was sent off in a Leinster Final against Offaly.

Here you go witnof , might be a few mistakes been a while since I heard it sung ...

On hill 16 we never gave up hope
Without Jimmy Keaveney the man we call the pope
The last six minutes the hill was going mad
But Offaly and the Hogan they were looking very sad

There was 14 on, 14 was off
Jimmy's on the sideline havin a gawk
Heffo and the boys were working out a plan
How to beat the Offaly lads without the extra man

Oh, of the second half oh Dublin should be proud
We put it in the net twice to get the goal allowed
Oh Dubs may come and Dubs may go
But history was made, six leinsters in a row

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

And then came the goal, it came from centre-field
Briany fists a tall ball down to Pat O'Neill
Anto O'Tooles pass I never will forget
Bernard Brogan hit a bomber and it landed in the net

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

We're with them when we win, we're with them when we lose
Roscommon and Kerry watch out for the super blues
We wont be easy beaten as long as we never yield
As long as theres a man to kick the ball upon the field

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

bad monkey, nice one, this is how it goes:

'The Ballad of 14 Men'....'(14 was off)'

On Hill 16 they never gave up hope
Without Jimmy Keaveney the man they call the Pope
In the second half the hill was going mad
Offaly in the Hogan were looking very sad

There was 14 on, 14 was off
Jimmy's on the sideline havin a gawk
Heffo and the boys were working out a plan
How to beat the Offaly lads without the extra man

Of the second half all Dublin should be proud
They had to put the ball in twice to get the goal allowed
For Dubs may come and Dubs may go
But history was made that day, six Leinsters in a row

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

Then came the goal, it came from centre-field
Briany knocked a tall ball down to Pat O'Neill
Anton O'Tooles pass I never will forget
Bernard Brogan hit a stunner and he stuck in the net

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

We're with them when we win, we're with them when we lose
Roscommon, Cork or Kerry will never beat the blues
Cos Dubs will never falter and Dubs will never yield
As long as we've a man to kick a ball upon a field

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

Im not sure theres any beating the wexford song! Although, if you class Dublin in the rare old times a GAA song then that beats it. Patsy Watchorne did say it was wrote with the intention of getting Dublin songs out there that could be identified with the team! It should of been played instead of some of the stuff they played at last years final. Although we were singing it before, all through and after the game.

My favourite song before Dublin games in the summer is streets of New York by the Wolfe Tones. I know it's nothing to do with football but every pub you go into before or after a game someone is singing that song. Classic stuff from the Tones and always reminds of the Dubs and the summer.
