Padraic Maher is an absolutely outstanding hurler and we (like the Wexford man said) in Cork would love to have a player like him as well. He may also be the new Mick Roche, whom I have never seen play. However, is Padraig Maher the best wing back in Ireland at present? Unfortunately not, unless you are completely biased, then you can not look beyond Tommy Walsh for that acolade. Is Padraig Maher the second best wing back in Ireland therefore? Well, probably not, can you look beyond JJ?? I doubt it. The third best wing back in Ireland then? I would say so. That is some achievement, however, given that Tommy and JJ are not only the best now but up there with the Brian Whelahans of this world the best of all time. If either of these two retire and given that Maher will be around for a while, I would expect this lad to become the best.

Michael O Muirchaeartaigh says Mick Roche was the best centre back of all time I also feel that Padraic Mahers best position is centre back as that is where he will end up shortly that is why he is the new Roche but at the moment he is a way better wing back than jj bennybunny

In fairness 4bythenore if kieran Mcgeeney ever took over the Kilkenny team and decided to poach players from other counties Im sure hed find a place for Padraig Maher somewhere on the Kilkenny team,and if they did get him they wouldnt concede six goals either.

Out of curiosity were you at the All Ireland last year??? All the rubbish that was talked all year about Cody playing Rice at 10 was to stop Maher from hurling. And as I predicted he played at midfield where he was needed badly as Reid cant play there. IF you even saw the match you would know Maher was on Brennan in the first half (who gave him problems) but did curb shefflin in the second. Lads come out with silly comments but get your facts right!!!

wrong again Nore but you are partly right Padraic Maher did curb Shefflin when moved on him and that was the fatal mistake by tipp management by not starting Maher on Shefflin instead of O keefe. Shefflin wouldnt have got a puck off Padraic Maher same as league final in 09 when Shefflin was sent off for a dirty stroke on Maher out of pure frustration and yes Padraic Maher is way ahead of jj no comparison Nore

i think the Waterford Man is far better than Maher. Until Maher wins some more All Irelands he wont be judged as highly as Roche.

Ha ha, ye lads should be comedians as I'm assuming ye are joking when ye are slagging off padraic maher.

It's very unfair to compare him to jj and tommy as he's only played 3 full seasons of senior hurling. In his fledgling career he has won 4 all Ireland medals, 2 minor, 1 u-21 as captain and one senior which in fairness is not a bad return.

He's my tipp player of the season for last year and I would have had him in pole position to win player of the year heading into the final. Obviously fennelly rightfully jumped ahead of him after the final.

P.S. The way jj played last year you'd easily find a place for maher in the Kilkenny 15. Any man who can tame shefflin should surely make any team in the land. Thiobraid Arann abu.
