GAA ar TG4

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

My only issue with TG4 is that the beo.tg4 broadcast is geoblocked. This isn't TG4's issue it's enforced by the GAA.

So those of us living offshore have to pay a subscription to Premier sports, on top of any other channels we subscribe to on sky, to pick up these games. Don't get me wrong I believe Premier sports is great and have subscribed to it since it's inception in the wake of setanta's collapse, however I have cancelled my subscription this season due to the arrival of my second child. I assume my viewing time will be greatly reduced and didn't want to pay the subscription for the limited games I'd get to see.

If the GAA really wanted to promote the sports then they should allow TG4 and RTE to broadcast the games online worldwide. Anyway always a couple of Irish proxy servers around to help you get round the geoblock.

Maybe not the full picture for sure, but definitly a snapshot of what does go on. I cannot understand how some of the high quality translation that they do is of any benifit to the Irish language, other than employing Irish speakers

______

It has been shown in the past that if you listen to a language over a period of time, it helps in your ability to understand the language/distinguish words from each other etc. But I know what you mean. I think in general their programming is good though, and their indigenous programming in particular i prefer an awful lot to that of Montrose.
The remit of TG4 is not solely to benefit the Irish Language though, it is to provide a platform for those people who want to engage with Irish but who can't on a regular basis, and to provide a television service to people in the Gaeltachtaí. The census results for Irish, which everybody laughs at, nevertheless show a huge grá for the language amongst a large proportion of the population - and it is to them that I think TG4 is aimed. If it converts other speakers, fantastic.

Dhorse

you said to Áth Cliath that the truth hurts after he told you it was a bit harsh to say the following

A resource of 32 million for the privilege of watching adds in English and Barney in Irish

Thats not the truth. Just think of the title of the thread 'GAA ar TG4' - so the priviledge goes further that Barney in Irish (which I dont even think is on TG4) and watching adds in English.

Don't turn this into an Irish language bashing thread by speaking about compulsory Irish. Go to another forum if you want to do that. I hear politics.ie is good for that sort of thing. Deal with the issue here. GAA ar TG4.

Did any one see Fearaibh Fionntrá last night? It was a great programme. It was about football in Ceann Trá (wets of Ciarraí) and about the 22 All Irelands won by people from Ceann Trá. There were good interviews from Paidí, Marc, Tomás, Feargal and Dara Ó Sé as well as contributions from Tom Long and other footballers from that part of the country. It was a lovely programme.

TG4 had a great GAA day yesterday which started with Cill Dara V Baile Átha Cliath (go speisialta dhuitse MESAmis), followed by cluichí na bliana and a cracker of a colleges hurling match and cluichí na bliana. I have to say, despite the negativity one or two on this thread, that we would be absolutely starved of GAA if it were not for TG4.

I'd usually be a fan of dhorse's posts but not on this occasion. I know my Gaeilge has definitely improved over the last few years mainly from watching GAA ar TG4.
The thing is that I once knew all those words so when I hear them again & can see the context they're being used in it usually comes back to me again.

Irish people in general seem totally frightened & ignorant of any language other than English. We only seem to emigrate to other English-speaking countries for example.

I love the fact that TG4 show our national sports and have to commend them for it. Their camera work can e a bit off at times, but more often than not the conditions at the games they are showing, due to the time of the year dictate that area. Love strolling out of Nowlan Park after a league game stopping in Lenihan's for 2 or 3 pints and watching the deferred coverage of Cork or Galway or Tipp. Better that than see 10 mins of a league match and 15 of Cyril talking about the games, TG4's coverage of the weekend games on a Monday is brilliant, and would like to see that stretched possibly when the full round of 1A and 1B games start in Feb.

Fair play to TG4, without them there would be no coverage of games until ch'ship time. Compare TG4's coverage to RTE'S. They(RTE) couldnt be bothered showing the league, and i think that sunday sport show should be shelved. What an awful show, you see two matches, and then they do a report on some rubbish to fill the rest of the time.

1100630 The GAA championship should be aired free around the world

Totally agree but more than likely isnt financially viable to do so and channels abroad have to charge ppv rates to ensure they can make some money as the viewing figures more than likely would be nowhere near high enough for games to be shown for free

I agreed it should be aired free but the Grab all association would lose a lot of money out of such a gesture.

The GAA enforce a geo-block on Irish television channel websites to limit access to Ireland, this can be by-passed by obtaining a Irish proxy server but trying to find a free proxy on match day isn't easy. The problem with the Premier sports channel (setanta replacement on UK sky package, channel 433) is that you have to subscribe to the channel and cannot pay only for the games you want to watch. I'd be more likely to pay for the games I wanted to see than pay a 12 month subscription to watch a handful of matches a year.

A lot of rte programmes are geo blocked as well. There is plenty of proxys available on matchdays. Go onto boards on big match days and look for a proxy and you will get one fairly quickly

Brilliant channel; absolute shining light in sea of revisionist broadcasting West Brit rubbish. Not ashamed to give the facts on Ireland's Nationalist history.

www.overplay.net $10 per month, gets you an ip address in Ireland or England and many other countries. Then you can watch any program RTE, TG4, BBC, Channel 4 etc. shows on their websites that is restricted to their territories. I have it and see all GAA games Rugby games, Soccer games that RTE or TG4 broadcasts.
