Cill Dara V Baile Átha Cliath next Sunday live at 2pm on TG4. Who will win?
Any chance we could use this thread to keep people up to date regarding GAA programmes ar TG4. What do all think of TG4's coverage of our games? I personally think they do a magnificant job and provide top quality coverage for the resources they have. The GAA should be greatful for what they are doing.
By the way, beidh an bua ag Baile Átha Cliath on Sunday.

Here here Culann, TG4 are a godsend when it comes to club football and the league. I also find their analysis to be insightful and unbiased.

It is good to have the TG4 coverage there seems to be more enthusism for the game there but as my Irish is not up to scratch I would prefer commentary in English and having coverage limited to TG4 tends to ghettoise what is after all out national game.

Mod, i'm fairly sure thats part of the point of having TG4 show the games, to try and encourage people to pick up a few more words.

Mod, TG4's aim is to provide a service for Irish speakers. RTÉ and TV3 were free to bid for the games TG4 show, and to broadcast them in whatever language they wanted, but choose not to. Also they are free to make programmes like Laochra Gael and cluichí na bliana, but again choose not to.
Regarding the Laois fella, who clearly doesnt' like one of his national languages, calm down! Its not a language bashing thread! Its about GAA programmes TG4 are willing to show and that other Irish stations choose not to. The aim of the thread is to keep GAA fans informed on programmes and games that TG4 will be broadcasting throughout the year. Its your choice as to whether you watch them or not!

How much does RTE cost to show a small amount of material in Irish or made in Ireland and Eastenders, Friends, The Simpsons, Allo Allo, Shortland Street, Doctors, Home and Away, Neighbours, CSI, Desperate Housewives etc?!

Edit: Sorry Laois guy (dhorse) I asked you for an opinion on TG4's coverage so your entitled to your negativity! I just read my original post again! However the aim of the thread is to keep GAA fans up to date on GAA related programmes on TG4.

I take it you're referring to me. I'm afraid your percepton is not as clear as you might wish. I actually love the Irish language, what I abhor is they way it is being destroyed by vested interests that thrive off the fact that it is compulsory which in itself puts young people off learning it, unlike irish music and games which are generally thriving because the people that participate are genuinely interested, As regards TG4, I find it a very good channel, for sport in general, documentaries and some unhollywood films, I would however question, as I would all public services, whether it is producing value for money.
I would hate to think that is just another milk cow for opportunists and culture fascists to make a killing on.
my wish for the irish language would be that the compulsory element would be taken out of it, allowing those of us that want to see it thrive to get on with it, and at the same time freing up valuable resources that are currently being wasted by the Irish language industry. As it stands it hasbecome a sort of sacred cow, any questioning or criticism is akin to treason

Níl aon fhoireann CLG darbh ainm Baile Átha Cliath. Is Áth Cliath muid, contae agus cathar le chéile.
Ná déan dearmad níorbh as Baile Átha Cliath ár gcaptaen, ach Sceirí, Contae Átha Cliath!!

RTE is financed 50% by licence fee.(a tax in reality) and 50% by commercial activity. The commercial activity is generally advertising, which is totally dependant on viewing figures. The programmes you mention above are the ones that bring in the revenue as well as some top sporting events which come at a cost of course. The foreign produced stuff is more affordable than home produced programming simply on a matter of scale. Unless RTE or any Irish chanel can sell on home produced shows they will lose money
Of course some people would wish for the National broadcaster to pump out a continous programming pertaining to Irish life and culture and In irish, one sure way to drive away advertisers, such systems pertain in North Korea etc. Even TG4 advertisers seem to have a preference for their message to go out through English for some reason, probably because they feel that's the what people listen to.
As a taxpayer I would question whether RTE is giving value for money also.

Very good points Dhorse - and I agree with them all - I only said that as a retort to "A resource of 32 million for the privilege of watching adds in English and Barney in Irish " which I don't feel gives quite the full picture!

Ye they do a good job alright but I'd far rather watch the games on RTE to be honest because I don't speak Irish.

Maybe not the full picture for sure, but definitly a snapshot of what does go on. I cannot understand how some of the high quality translation that they do is of any benifit to the Irish language, other than employing Irish speakers

You sure did. I think their coverage is fine, my irish just about keeps up with the commentary, not the analysis generally, but as I prefer to attend games with neither commentary or analysis i dont find it an issue, in fact i feel we could do with less analysis but it's a part of the overall package at this stage, it allows the programmers to fit in a couple of more ad slots, and gives some vieewers a lead in what to say if asked for an opinion even if they dont have a clue of what goes on in a game. I just re read your post also. You referenced their resources which is what I responded to.
