Any Clubs / Grounds named after Women out there?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just wondering,

Taking clubs and grounds named after Saints e.g. St. Brigids etc. out of the equation I was wondering are there any GAA clubs or grounds out there named after women?

The only one I can think of is Markievicz Park in Sligo as a ground named after a patriot woman but no clubs.

I'm thinking of women that could have clubs named after them like Grainne Mhaol, Anne Devlin, Elizabeth O'Farrell, etc!

Anybody know of any?.....do they exist at all?.....does the GAA frown on it or isnt keen on it I wonder?

No Cuchulainn, I'm just 4 or 5 miles over the road, on the Kerry side of course :) Halfway between Ballydesmond and Castleisland town. I know Ballinahulla well.....small world indeed!

Pinkie you've caught my attention on this one as I'm very interested in this type of stuff. I do know that one of the 16 men executed after the Easter Rising was a Michael O Hanrahan from Carlow Town. I understand the train station in Wexford Town is named after him so I am wondering has the family Wexford connections and would Geraldine O Hanrahan be linked to him. Another possibility is that its an amalgamation of 2 Clubs . The name Geraldine is linked to the Earl of Desmond in Medieval Irish History and if I'm not mistaken there is at least one GAA Club somewhere who uses the name Geraldine. The Geraldine part could be linked to this period of history and the O Hanrahan to the executed 1916 man. I have sent a couple of e-mails to guys who might be able to help if I get any info I'll let you know. In the meantime if any other poster knows they might let us both know.

Athy GAA club grounds in Kildare is named Geraldine Park not in relation to the female name Geraldine but in connection with the history of the Earl of Desmond.

Lads, I had thought of that but I dont actually think the name 'Geraldine' refers to a woman in the GAA instance!

Thanks lads, the more I think about it the surer I am that that is where the Geraldine part comes from and the O'Hanrahan part could well be called after the man who was executed in 1916. If there was an actual person called Geraldine O Halloran who was famous enough to have a GAA Club called after her, I'm sure we would have heard of her.

There is a Geraldines Morans in Cabinteely, the Geraldines refer to the noble Fitzgeralds as in The Geraldines or in this case Lord Edward Fitzgerald I suspect Geraldines is Fitzgerald not the female first name.
