You're making a mountain out of mole hill Breff... it was only a harmless butt back at Mickey... and stop with the painful exaggerating with this "every thread" nonsense JinxyPoop (UK) - Posts: 1162 - 22/11/2011 11:52:38 1073591 Link 0 |
Interesting thread but once again hijacked by eejits like MickeyLinden who must wake up and go to sleep every night thinking of the greatness of Kerry football, torturing himself relentlessly. Poor man. Cute_Kerry_Hoor (Kerry) - Posts: 2518 - 22/11/2011 11:52:44 1073592 Link 0 |

90's for me. I had only started to play football when An Dún picked up their 4th All ireland in '91. I thought it would be like this every year. I simply think it is better for the GAA to have new teams winning provincials and Sams/Liams. Things change and the organisation is what it is now but I will always count myself lucky to have seen great players and famous moments that made the 90's. I still have a few VHS tapes from '91-'97 which have been converted to DVD and given out as gifts to nostalgic old boys like myself. The biggest mystery to me is how that great down team only won 2 all Ireland, mason blaney Carr linden withnell mccarton now that is a serious forward line. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 22/11/2011 12:05:45 1073606 Link 0 |

Football wise the 90's win out easy enough. The standard of football in the country was higher overall and the various provincial Championships were brilliant to watch at times. Down, Meath, Derry, Dublin, Donegal, Tyrone, Cork, Mayo, Galway, Kildare were all challenging with good sides while Kerry struggled badly in the early part of the decade. That Dublin side was a bit unlucky as they ran Ulster teams very close when they played and though there was controversy in their win over Tyrone in 95 they were worthy of at least one All Ireland in that period. Down had a fantastic team; Mickey Linden, James McCartan, Greg Blaney, Ross Carr all great ball players while Derry and Donegal had teak tough fellas who could play football as well. The Dublin/Meath quartet of games will go down in history though let's not pretend that there wasn't cyncical stuff going on as well. Ulster was very physically competitive while Dublin and Meath battered each other as did Mayo and Meath (Colm Coyle on his own) in 96. Meath in particular got a lot stick for their 'tactics' though they were a very good football side. The 00's brought more tactical play to the fore with systems dictating play and while some may scorn that the fact is there were still very good footballers around as well. Maurice Fitzgerald still there, Dara O'Se, Dara O'Cinneide, Seamus Moynihan, the Gooch, Oisin McConville, Stevie McDonnell, Ronan Clarke, Stephen O'Neill, Brian McGuigan, Peter Canavan still around, Sean Cavanagh, Cormac McAnallen (RIP) all very good footballers. The term 'puke football' was a lazy cop out used by people with a sinister agenda who were bitter about SAM going over the border and who have a very partitionist mindset; indeed Larry Tompkins wrote an article highlighting this when Tyrone and Armagh met in the 2003 final. He said there was sour grapes going on outside Ulster as some didn't like this new Northern resurgence. However football is cyclical and now it's Dublin's turn and maybe they and Kerry will dominate again for a few years BUT then someone else will come to the fore and so on; that's what makes sport great. I suppose the back door has made it easier for teams to win an All Ireland. In the 90's the All Ireland champions could be out after there first game wheres as now they get another chance. In the 90's Down could have won 1 or 2 more All Irreland had there been a back door. That said there was a back door in hurling in the 90's and only one team won by it so maybe it was just a more open championship then moomoo (Kerry) - Posts: 4023 - 22/11/2011 15:02:34 1073760 Link 0 |
