North-South divide - Joe Kernan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It's somewhat ironic that this thread has turned into a North/South discussion when the original Joe Kernan article posted by Millhouse related to the fact that after the incident that Joe writes about refers to North and South Armagh when the players from the North and the players from South Armagh had seperate training sessions for their own safety.

Don't see the irony myself. In the second part of the article he goes on to talk about North/South divide as in the island. Maybe you just didn't read it properly

There is no north/south divide and it is a nonsense to suggest there is.

Sorry yes Joe refered to the disgraceful incident in Portlaoise. I wasn't critiising the thread since it has highlighted and reminded us of the the harassement and the murder of GAA people in the six counties going about their business of supporting and playing our national games.

It's pretty sad if you define your sense of Irishness by quoting wickipedia.

1055400 Plenty of people killed going and coming from matches. Two lads were killed from derry on their way home from dublin. Very sad.

Sambo mc naughton's biography covers it quite well. Hurleys being taken from his boot and broken for no reason at checkpoints etc.

The Antrim team of 1989 must be one of the most remarkable achievements in gaelic games. To get there despite what they had to put up with. The spontaneous guard of honour for them from Offaly must have put the hairs on the back of the neck on end. Hope to see them there again.

Glad those days are over.

Some Southern posters stated that a few of the comments are harsh. Believe me I have heard them too from friends and family who live in the 26 counties and it is is certainly NOT my intention to offend anyone BUT I can no longer listen to the crap that my community has had to put up with from a certain section of Southern society and a right wing, Unionist Dublin 4 media there with a sinister agenda. A close Southern relative said doing business there during the Celtic Tiger was cut throat, immoral and in many dealings lawless and totally illegal BUT that it was the only way he added. He said that corruption was rife in local and national government and that pay offs ensured you got what you wanted if you had the money. He said some companies and dodgy business people ripped people off, took money off them for non delivery of goods and services, declared themselves bankrupt on the Friday and reopened under other names on the Monday. There was an awful culture of greed, selfishness and me, me, me that took the soul of the nation.
I too found people colder, unfriendly and almost in contempt of Northern people and I firmly believe that this is a direct consequence of a rotten, partitionist, revisionist Unionist media in Dublin that has waged a war of hatred on Northern Nationalists especially during the 'Celtic Tiger' period. This can be seen in the current Presidential campaign, the last Southern election, during the Peace Process which the largest media group in the South vehemently opposed and in sporting terms when Armagh and Tyrone were constantly pillioried and attacked for daring to win SAM. The word puke was introduced and that seems to the way that the South now looks at and treats the Northern Catholic community. Well the dam of resentment and anger in the North has now burst and the Nationalist community are no longer prepared to take these lies and demonization any longer from other so called Irish people. I know that there are sensible, genuine people on HS and in the South who are as fed up with this nonsense as well but unfortunately they seem to the silent few. I stand by everything because it is fact and if that offends some well the truth always hurts.

Indeed Brend the sight of Tyrone being thrown about like toys by Dublin last season was pitiful; it nearly made you want to hug a Tyrone fan........nearly!

How dare you ulsterman, just because someone might countenance yere views does not make them any less an irishman and this is from one proud free stater and not some D4 partitionist media mogul, all our families have a history and are proud of that history, such as a relative fighting in ww1, that does not make us any less of an irishman, in fact WE were born in the republic and are proud irishmen and thank god for living in a democratic state.

Your pseudonym mlcollins and 'proud Freestater' comment tells us everything we need to know; you are one of those I am talking about who thinks the border stops at Dundalk and who hasn't a clue. Take it down from the mast friend!

Ulsterman. Some of them comments are definitely harsh...(not the Tyrone Dublin one ha)...I agree too that the D4 media are biased,...and the corruption that happened goes without saying...but we are certainly not a cold uncaring bunch of people...Whatever is being said about Martin McGuinness has no bearing on where he is from, it would be exactly the same if it was a Sinn Fein candidate from the South....,it is about what he represents...(not that I have any problem with that).....don't forget Mary McAleese, nobody cares that she is from the North..people had no problem voting for her, and herself and Martin have done a very fine job for the last 14 years...and practically everybody down here would agree with that...

Unionist Dublin 4 media
--------------------------------------

This really is hilarious!!

Us poor Dubs!!.....and 'our' media!!

One minute the media is lambasted for 'hyping' up the Dublin GAA team for its inevitable fall and then they are all regarded as being unionists who live in Dublin 4.

Im just wondering if anybody out there has ever met a "True blue Dublin fan who lives on Ailesbury Road D4, wearing 'dubes', chinos, Dubs jersey, wax jacket, orangemans sash, gloves n gauntlets, a black umbrella and bowler hat and sings 'Hill 16 is Dublin only' at the top of his voice in Kielys of Donnybrook every night!!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

see its people like you who are the problem right there mlcollins. why are you getting offended? is it because ulsterman offended the people of the south? that "they" (northerners) offended "us" (southerns). you are living proof of the partistionist mindset of the south, and this mindset has been ingrained in the irish psyche mainly through the media of the south for the last two decades. and the point is, you took offence unintentionally. you seen "your country" being attacked by a poster of "another country", so defended "your" country automatically. how about its one irish man having a go at his own country? does that sound better? and what he said isnt untrue
