Parents do the right thing....

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'm a parent with two of those sons. I spent the last 17 years of my life living away from my native county but still like to travel to some league games and all champioship games. I do not go to games involving the county I currently live in and I make no excuses to anybody for that. My two sons travel to all the games I go to and are what can be considered honourary supporters. Whats more they were extremely upset after being knocked out this year.

We are all heavily involved locally within our club. I'm a Kildareman and proud of it and could never see myself supportering any other county. I'm sure my young lads will travel when they get old enough.

If you go down to my local club O'Dywers in Balbriggan you are going to see black kids whos Parents emigrated here playing football and hurling. We have a large African population in teh town and its great to see their kids playing GAA and being part of our community. That's the way it should be. You should always support your own county but that doesn't mean you cant shout for your parents one if its different. I'd be more worried that those kids with the Dublin jerseys aren't participating in the local clubs.

My father was a Scotsman but it was my grandfather a Kildare man who gave me a love of the Gaelic games . For that and many other things I will always be grateful to him. Some of my best memories of him are going to games with him in Croker, especially Dublin playing Kildare, with him in his lilly white jersey and me in my blue dubs jersey he bought for me. I still have a soft spot for Kildare and Cavan(Grannys from Cavan they met at a GAA match in Croker).

A friend of mine from Down and her husband from England bought their daughters Dubs jerseys this year. They have Down Jerseys for the Down games and Dublin Jerseys for the Dubs games. Theres going to be some slagging if Dublin are playing Down and they have the Down jerseys on.

I'm a Dub. I live in Derry for 10 years now and have a 9 year old son. He's gaelic mad and has gone to games with me since he was no age. I've taken him wide and far to see Derry play and obviously to see the Dubs as well. His preference? At the moment it's the Dubs. He knows all the players names , their clubs and could even tell you what they scored so far in the championship. He was by my side at every league and championship game for the last 3 years and was so happy to witness the all Ireland win last sunday he burst into tears of joy! The way I look at it is this , if he wants to support the Dubs that's HIS choice , if he wants to support Derry that's also HIS choice and I'd have no problem either way.

you could look at it in another way that its great to see these parents passing down years of tradition of where they came from to there children,
i suppose if country people didnt have a chip on there shoulder towards dubs the parents might not feel as much need to drum it into that there dubs and always will be

Lord I have read it all now.

from delordub :

"Well Lillywhite. I'm obviously a dub living in Kildare...My son too supports Dublin, yes he goes to school in Kildare, but he still plays GAA for a Dublin club, he didn't want to leave when we moved from Dublin...he spent the first 7yrs of his life in Dublin."

Question for you delordub... What age did your lad start playing for his Dublin club ? At 7 years of age kids are barely able to kick a football or use a hurley. You're telling us that your son didn't want to leave his club at 7 and start with a new club in Kildare. I'd say he wasn't allowed to leave by Mammy & Daddy and for that very same reason he supports the Dubs. All kids should be encouraged to play with their local clubs , good, bad or indifferent. If he is good enough he could win Sam with Kildare someday.

I think most parents let the kids decide. My sister, a dub, living just over the border in Meath, has 2 boys in the local GAA club. One supports Dublin, the other Meath. Makes for interesting coversations at teatime.

I have been in Lucan Sarsfields club since I was 6 years old and was never once brought to a Dubs game by my father but had to endure being brought to the once in a blue moon occasions when his west of Ireland county made it to croker to lose or a Connaught final just because it was a day out!
----------------------------------
Once again people on here with difficulty seem to need to get help to understand plain English!!

I joined Sarsfields when I was 6 years old because they dont allow infants/toddlers to join the club before that age!
People with difficulty seem to think this translates into: 'I moved to Lucan from the west of Ireland when I was 6'!!....incredible!!

Also, 'attending the games of the county my father comes from', seems to be difficult plain English for some to understand also!!....Cant think on any more plain a way to write it though!!.....!!

Oh, and for other folks!...There is no reason for you to know what west of Ireland county my father comes from!....the county he comes from is an insignificant matter to me and the same therefore applies to you!.....I have no care as to your family characteristics!!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

What is wrong with you people if you live in derry then bring your son to see derry like his class mates.
A good friend of mine his father was a laois man yet he never enrolled his sons with a club in laois and
his sons grew up as true meath men, similarly, Des Fergusons son terry played for meath as paul curran
the son of a meath man played for dublin

You try to ask this poster a genuine question an he throws it back in your face. No matter how you look at it anyway your half west of Ireland blood, that must kill you considering you despise anything west of the shannon.....your first name oliver by any chance?

Well my stars, Snuff is only a wannabe Dub from out west, its nice to see him coming out though. Hopefully now we'll see a happier more level headed Snuff, can't have healthy keeping that bombshell bottled up for all those years.
