Parents do the right thing....

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Pleased as I was to see our near neighbours winning the All Ireland on Sunday I feel it's time for some exiled dubs to examine their roles in their local GAA communities. In this weeks Meath Chronicle a Navan resident of eight years is pictured with his house emblazoned in blue. That's fine by me however this fella has a twelve year old daugther who is following in daddies footsteps in being as a true blue dub, thats where the problem exists. On Sunday Cian O Sullivan played for Dublin despite the fact his parents are Kerry people yet with the attitudes of some exiled dubs children living as far from the capital as Carlow and beyond are wearing the sky blue shirts and dreaming of representing Dublin.
What is wrong with theses so people.
It's like this, my grandfather was from Tipperary and by all accounts a fierce Tipp man he was but through his work his sons grew up in Kilkenny as Kilkenny lads. While he still adored Tipp and totally despised Kilkenny he wasn't so short sighted as to rear his sons as Tipp fans.
So all I am saying is Parents please show some common sense and try and go by the ethos of the GAA - that is for club and for county

Atta, you will find that as these kids grow older and become more involved locally that they will start to support the county they live in but also to retain an affection for Dublin. My nephews who were born in Dublin but who have been in KIldare since they were 3/4, now play with local club and are proud lilies but were supporting Dubs on Sunday.

Donegal have used the Marriott in Ashbourne as base the night before big games in Croker hill16man. Thus the reason for the banner you speak of.

Nothing wrong with the parents supporting Dublin and their children too. I'd hope that the parents get their children involved with their local GAA clubs in Meath, Kildare etc.

If the children become involved at a local level in their own county they will, as they grow older, begin to support their native county whilst still have a certain level of attachment to the county of their parents.

This happens in Dublin the whole time. Country folk living in Dublin continue to support their native county and their children follow them too and as the children grow up they become more and more attached to Dublin. But they always keep a fondness for their ancestral county as well.

Nothing wrong with any of it.

Maybe you didnt read my post otherwise i fear you just can't understand what I am saying.
Go back and have another read and if you still cant get your head around it then take two aspirin go into a dark room and have a sleep for a half hour.
Btw i did see that donegal banner outside ashbourne but this is hardly relevant to this debate as it was in all likelihood put their by adults whos children support meath.

Oh please!!

This really is the chickens coming home to roost for the culchies!!

For so long in the county Dublin there have been country parents bringing up their kids in the colours of the parents county and the kids knowing nothing of Dublin and not even supporting Dublin because they had been brain washed by the parents!

The 'they come here and we go there' demographic of the celtic tiger days with Dubs living way down the country where we never used to live in the past has finally shown the country folk what its like to cocoon your kids into the fold of your own county!

I have been in Lucan Sarsfields club since I was 6 years old and was never once brought to a Dubs game by my father but had to endure being brought to the once in a blue moon occasions when his west of Ireland county made it to croker to lose or a Connaught final just because it was a day out!
I loved being at the match!....but was never brought to see the Dubs!.....my first time to see Dublin was a league game with my club going!
So there you go!....I was that soldier so to speak!

The lesson I learned for myself quite naturally was: 'Your parents are from their county but you are from your own county and it is a sad child that doesnt learn that lesson!'........Parents can not make you a part of something you are not!........My homeplace is Lucan, which is in Dublin! I am a Dubliner! (No amount of brainwashing by a parent could ever change that!).

Meath poster!....Get used to the reverse of what has been happening in Dublin since the foundation of the GAA!........If the kid has a GAA heart they will soon realise where they 'THEMSELVES' are from!!....just like I did!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

so its ok to put up a big donegal banner because they stay there for 1 night but a persona who lives there cant put up a dublin banner ?

Theres plenty of Dubs living around my area atta (thousands infact) and I'd know a good chunk of them aswell and from what I can see their kids are split pretty much 50/50 over who they support. Personally I don't really care who they support, its up to themselves really.

Now on the other hand what I do find a bit stupid are the ones who have been living in Meath (or Kildare, or Westmeath etc etc) since day one going around in Dublin jerseys, I mean they're completely deluding themselves.

Sorry lads it's gonna get worse. Everyone, especially kids, love a winner. Especially a glamour team like Dublin. :)

Most of the kids walking around meath in dublin shirts have indeed spent most of their
lives living in meath, how can you say you dont care who they support.
I was born and bred meath and i am meath to the backbone but if i had to move to dublin
or another county i would rare my children to support that county, you see thats what the gaa
is all about- a sense of belonging to your community your kinspeople. Otherwise the GAA is fecked

Hill16man I never said it was right or wrong with regards the Navan incident and to be honest I have no interest in it.

I was just giving the reason behind the banner being up in Ashbourne. And to be honest they have stayed there more than one night, several nights down through the years in fact.

Look it just doesn't really bother me who these kids decide to support once its their decision, I don't think its nice to see parents encouraging their children to support Dublin over Meath (lets just use these two as an example) when the children have been living here all their lives.

But then again don't forget either that plenty of children grow up wanting to be like their parents and so will just naturally support whoever they support, thats why we have an epidemic of Man U and Liverpool supporters in this country.

BTW I was born and bred in Meath aswell and so were both my parents, I'm as green and gold as the Green Giant wearing an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini atta and if I moved to Dublin or down the country my kids could support whoever they wanted, but if it wasn't Meath they'd probably get a lot of stick for it!!!

i don't think some of you really understand what it is like. i know of dubs that moved to meath up to 20 years ago and they despise meath like all dubs of 20 years ago. Fair enough after 20 years in Meath they continue to support Dublin but there kids who have lived in meath from the day they were born have supported Dublin because there parents buy them the jersey and take them to Dublin games only. Some of these area now have as many dubs as meath people and in Bettystown for example there are more dubs than royals there during the summer.

It's quite pathetic that they support dublin when they are meath true and true. And the few that actually bother to play for the local club get stick for it and rightly so.
It's one thing them not paying for a meath club but out of thousands of dubs leaving in 1 meath area alone only a handfull play with the local club and the others that play gaa travel for over an hour to keep playing with a dublin club instead even though they have lived most their lives in meath.

Maybe there kids in 20 years time will support meath but it's at the stage where kids being born in meath in 30 years time, who's last link to dublin was their grand parents could be supporting dublin gaa and not meath. that's not what the gaa is about.

can i also add that i have many a friend who comes with me to every meath match and there die hard meath fans even though they were born in counties up north or in the west. they moved here when they were between the ages of 1 and 10 but have now fully embraced the county that they have spent either most of their life or over half their life living in. their parents don't give a damn that they are not supporting mayo armagh down, antrin or tyrone but the same can't be said of dublin. the parents hate meath and couldn't bear to see their sons or daughters wearing the jersey.

Why would anyone hate Meath for God's sake? A nice county with nice beaches but totally irrelevant as a football power for several years now.

don't know where I fit in. My grandfather cane from inner city dublin, my whole life spent in glasgow till I moved here three years back. Two boys are 100% Dublin, the oldest aged 11 has been to 5 Leinster finals and was there again on Sunday. At present he has no interest in supporting the rossies, but I expect as he grows older and plays away with the local club that may change. At least he is supporting a gaa county. Too much interest in soccer around here for my liking.

So your not really a dub after all then..... all the bravado is to try and convince people he's a true blue dub.... It all makes sense now, only took 10 years to get to the route of it!!!! Jayuss I fell like doctor phil now.

Snuf:
So your not accepted as a true dubs, and also your Daddy didn't accept you ... tell us how that made you feel!
