Towns and Villages Nationwide with NO GAA teams

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Cant think of one town or village in Meath that does not compete or at least is amalgamated to form a team.An interesting statistic is that the bigger town teams are struggling to win championships while the smaller rural teams are more successful in recent years.

Any Dubs know what Club/Clubs cover the area from Clann na Gael/Fontenoy in Sandymount to Cuala in Dalkey.
Its a pretty large area with a big population from Blackrock to Dun Laoighaire?
Amn't aware of any clubs who claim this as their catchment area.

Your'e right, along the south east coast is really a GAA free zone. Egg chasing & shopping are the main leisure activities.
Its a bit like Navan I suppose!!

Are we talking parishes or Villages?

If its Parishes, I reckon we'd have a few but if it was actual villages then the number would shoot up.

In Kerry, parishes I know of:
Camp play with Annascaul. The team is 75% Camp born players so the Annascaul name is an insult to them
Castlemaine play with Milltown - but the club is called Milltown/Castlemaine.
Cloghane parish plays with Castlegregory
Barraduff with Rathmore

Before the 90's there were very few Camp lads playing with Annascaul. In the 70's & 80's it was manly all Annascaul and that was the time they bult on to get the success in the 90's Camp lads came along and took all the credit for the success then

I think every parish has a team with the exception of three I think

Sion Mills has no team which is a very surprising condsidering the political make up of the town however it is a cricket stronghold!

Fivemiletown, although the town is majority unionist there would be enough of a population to make a team there not sure if the locals play for Brookborough in Fermamnagh or Clogher but I would have thought there would be a large enough numbers for a team in FMT

Also out east I dont think that Coagh have a team although is Moortown in Coagh parish?

As well as that I think that Lissan and Ballinderry are both in Tyrone but there teams play in Derry!

Ah Liam Carraig is in St.Kierans.. I know loads of people from Carraig who are proud Kierans men.. You were right about Carraig Celtic though, great club and the few scoops in the knockdown helps too

Moortown is in the parish of Ardboe.Ogra Colmcille would be the club closest to Coagh.

Hi Liam, Moomoo and Diablode. Yes camp play with Annascaul and Cloghane play with Castlegregory but there is nothing surprising about this as camp is part of Annascaul R.C. parish and Cloghane is part of Castlegregory R.C. parish which is how they were split. They may be separate civil districts/parishes but when based on catholic parishes the clubs are split perfectly.

What Liam asked about the area around the seven hogs, is interesting. As Diablode said, the area is Aughacasla and Aughacasle N.S is right beside the Seven Hogs (old Tralee Bay Hotel). Half of Aughacasla N.S would be from Aughacasla (playing for Castlegregory) and half from Camp (Playing for Annascaul). Added to that confusion is the fact that half of Aughacasla is in the Camp postal area. Wich make sthings worse.

Needless to say Rivalry is pretty high between CastleGregory and Annascaul. They have had some success together when amalgamated in the county minor league but that is no longer the case.

People from Bangor, Ards and Groomport would play for St Pauls in Holywood.

To dunal,

you are correct the people of Bangor etc play for St. Paul's in Hollywood, but the original post wanted to know what towns don't have a club, and there is no gaa club in bangor any more, it ceased in the '70's. but with a population in excess of 100,000 between bangor and ards ,there is no gaa club there,
In fact the majority of north Down there is little gaa, take hillsborough, over to Comber and into Dundonald/Stormont east belfast i think we have just Breadagh and Carryduff for a population of anything between 100,000 -250,000

There is no GAA club in Aghalee ,Newtownabbey (massive population), Doagh, Carrickfergus, Eden, Whitehead (although Larne played here for a while), Ballynure, Ballyclare..... actually there is loads of very sizeable places in Co. antrim with no gaa involvement

Aghalee gaels would most likely be playing for Aghagallon in Antrim whereas the others cited by Cuchullain would have no history of local clubs: just hark back to July and the rioting in Ballyclare after removal of flags outside the Local Catholic Church: on the plus side the success of Naomh Brid in South Belfast in the last 10-12 years and the revitalising Na Piarsaigh in North Belfast is to be commended
