Next week sees another installment of the great rivalry between Down and Armagh and this will be seen especilly in the town of Newry, which is divided between the 2 counties. What makes the rivalry unique there are down and armagh gaa clubs in the same town, the Down County pitch Paric Esler is according to old records in County Armagh, while players of both counties for the most part go to school in newry. Have we any other towns with a gaa record which has been divided at ulster finals and national league finals over the years cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1691 - 20/05/2011 10:30:46 935241 Link 0 |

In Mayo Shrule is on the Mayo/Galway border as is ballindine. both villages are jsut inside mayo. charlestown has the mayo/sligo rivilary. but i dont think any town in ireland can compare to ballaghdereen - a town in co.roscommon who play their football in mayo - why is that? well i think it goes back to the border changes years ago. ballaghdereen was originally in co.mayo but they moved it into roscommon - the people refused to play for roscommon so continued to play in and for mayo......i am open to correction but i think thats how it went. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11689 - 20/05/2011 10:50:04 935259 Link 0 |

A British landlord wanted cheaper rates on his land hence he got the border redrawn which put Ballag in Roscommon. The Roscommon border was originally 5 miles out the Dublin road in Ballag. I'd consider it Mayo. paddyogall (Mayo) - Posts: 5110 - 20/05/2011 12:10:09 935360 Link 0 |
In Cavan part of the Gowna parish is in Longford, while part of Mountnugent is in Meath. Am open to correction on this. doratheexplorer (Cavan) - Posts: 1467 - 20/05/2011 12:33:59 935391 Link 0 |
Ballagh is a weird example alright- its not even debateable that its in roscommon, its miles inside the roscommon border possibly 5- 10 miles inside, its a very strange one indeed but as we say at home let them play wherever they want to play so its not a big issue liathroidboy (Mayo) - Posts: 4921 - 20/05/2011 12:46:49 935408 Link 0 |

So is Newry the largest urban area with this gaa rivalry - we have Ballyholland Harps who play in Down and are in down, we have Newry Bosco who are on the Armagh side of the town but play Down as do Mitchels and Shamrocks ( but these two are disputed by some) and Corrinshego who are on the Armagh side of the town and play in Armagh. cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1691 - 20/05/2011 13:20:34 935458 Link 0 |
The town of Athlone on the border between Westmeath and Roscommon - anything on the westside of the river is in the Parish of St Peter and Paul's which is Clann na nGael club's territory but a portion of that side of the town is in Westmeath. decky (Roscommon) - Posts: 384 - 20/05/2011 13:46:02 935484 Link 0 |

The largest urban area divided by GAA boundaries does indeed involve Co Down, but it is Belfast and not Newry. The River Lagan is the line separating Down and Antrim. Bredagh of Down and St Malachy's of Antrim look at each other across the Ormeau Bridge. Carryduff is just to the south of Bredagh, while St Brigid's is the closest Antrim club to St Malachy's. Bray Emmetts won a All Ireland representing Dublin while being a County Wicklow town. Their juvenile teams in both hurling and footballl play in both the Dublin and Wicklow leagues but are only allowed contest championship in Wicklow. Also in underage football a few years back Foxrock miles inside Dublin played in the Wicklow football leagues. Wicklowman (Wicklow) - Posts: 1145 - 21/05/2011 09:44:44 936074 Link 0 |
