Christy Ring Cup 2011

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The competition has had a tough few years between promotion/relegation play-offs to no promotion at all and then the option of promotion. The GAA haven't really given the competition a sound footing. Fair play to all the counties involved anyways. At least they can accept the level of the competition and get on with the game. Hurling does need to develop in more counties, the Christy Ring counties are where it's most likely to happen.

Moomoo unfortunately I requested the DVD from my cousin who was part of the westmeath panel at the time. A cricket match would have had a faster pace to it. I only watched about three quarters of the game because I couldn't bare anymore. I ought to have known twas goin to be chronic bad as my cousin is useless and blatantly one sided yet he was still considered good enough for the westmeath panel.

Interesting that 2 years ago Ballyhale Shamrocks, on their way to another All-Ireland club final could only beat the Carlow champions by 4 or 5 points.

womenourlimits, whatever about the Christy Ring Cup, if you've no time for the tournament, well you've no time for the tournament. Is the Leinster Championship just a tool for Galway to get more games or do ye actually want to win it?

Not too many i try to go to as many games as i can but there never hugh crowds, mind you the media in Kerry dont help. On Raido Kerry last weekend during a report of the game in the last few mins they cut away to talk about showjumping!!

I try to get to as many games as I can as well. The Kerryman in fairness gives the team some good coverage. Radio Kerry used to give the Kerry hurlers good coverage in the 90's. Nearly all league games had live coverare between division 1 and division 2 games. I remember listening to commentary on a division 2 game v Offaly where Kerry led until very late in the game. Many other games were covered like the Kilkenny game as well. I think most Munster Championship games were covered as well. Most of those games tended to be on a Saturday evening against Tipperary or Cork generally.
I think if Kerry do make a return to the Munster Championship at some stage, that those games will get covered. As for the league games it's not likely unless they were to make division one.
The crowds aren't big anyways. Having the Kerry footballers playing on the same day won't help. The GAA themselves haven't done a whole lot to promote the competition. Even a simple move as mentioned to allow the CRC winner join the McCarthy qualifiers would raise the profile of the competition.

Maybe if the league fixtures were structured in such a way so that counties' senior hurlers & footballers could play more double headers especially where dual players isn't an issue like in Kerry? Might help attract a larger awareness of the hurlers Christy Ring games.

They could arrange a few double headers alright but I wouldn't be too bothered about that. It was a pity this year the two biggest games were away to Clare and Limerick. It'd have been good to have gotten at least one in a home venue but them's the breaks.

Can anyone clarify if a relegation system is set to return to the McCarthy Cup when 16 counties are involved? If say Kerry and Wicklow join over the next two years. I think there's a provision once 16 counties are involved, they'll bring back relegation. If they do, I'm sure it'll last as long as a certain few aren't involved.

Surely the idea is to get as many counties as possible able to compete in the provincial &/or Liam McCarthy championships?

Well the crowds could not be any worse.

Is the Christy Ring being shown on RTE?

Think the GAA have fecked up with regards the Christy Ring, Rackard and Meagher cups. Hurling teams finished up by mid June is stupid and disrespectful, give the lads a chance to hurl in the good weather of the summer on hard fast pitches.

I havn't gone to a Kerry Hurling game now in a few years, I remember back in the mid 90's a few of Kerry Hurling games were curtain raisers to football games. i remember seeing Kerry vs Dublin as a double header in Killarney.

I think what Dublin did this year in promoting the two games and playing double headers is the way forward. In this day and age money is tight I can only imagine if you were from Cork or Galway where their is duel interest double headers would only increase the crowd numbers. I for one would love to see Kerry Hurling/Football double headers.

A few years back Kerry were playing Galway in football and Laois in hurlers on the same day both at home and the county board had some bs excuse that the pitch in Trlaee wouldn't be able to stage 2 games in one day

Ya I actually remember that.. but even looking at the timing of the Christy Ring Final, same day as Kerry/Limerick Footballers - they not doing themselves any favours are they?
