McCloskey blasts Wicklow gamesmanship
03 May 2011

Derry assistant hurling manager Sean McCloskey has accused Wicklow of indulging in gamesmanship during last Saturday's Christy Ring Cup clash.

The Garden County registered their third win of the year over the northerners after racing into a 16-point half-time lead, but McCloskey was unhappy with the methods used by the Leinstermen to prevent Derry from building up any momentum when assisted by the wind in the second half.

"They slowed the whole thing down in the second half. It was obviously a policy. They lay down and squealed and play-acted," he claimed in the Irish News.

"The idea was to slow the game down as much as possible and stop us from gaining any momentum. We were totally dominant in the second half.

"They knew they had a good lead and that we had a strong breeze and would be coming at them. We couldn't gather any momentum because there were so many stoppages.

"Normally it wouldn't happen in hurling. Normally when a man gets a slap he doesn't make a song and dance about it. But it was obviously a tactic of theirs. They wanted to slow the game down and stop us getting into our stride."

I think that to be fair a few more Derry players could have walked last Saturday, its a pity that their manager has come out with this guff as Derry are a good hurling side, and just came out on the wrong side of two classics with Wicklow this year.

Absolutely sponger their goalkeeper nearly decapitated Andy O'Brien on the 3rd goal. Derry were very lucky not to have had 4 players sent off.

Can't beleive Down are home again for the 3rd week in a row. This game should have been played on a neutral venue. I am glad Derry finally got a home tie.

Dont think home and away matters a flick in this competition!!

Well after that mouthing by this McCloskey fella about so called ''Wicklow gamesmanship'', I hope Kildare hop off them. We beat them 3 times in any matter of weeks and he just couldn't take it. 3-11 to 1-1 at half-time, what's he on about??? Derry were dangerous in the second half - 2 sent off and should have been more.

This will be Kildare's second away match - so now that Derry have a home game they're quits with the whining!!!

Predictions

Down vs. Meath - I think the royals might take this one. Down have a lot of injuries according to the Irish News. Meath bye the slightest.
Derry vs. Kildare - Tough one to call. Derry have a few suspensions, perhaps i will stick with my Leinster foes and go for a Leinster double this weekend in the 1/4 finals.

Home field doesn't really matter at this stage.

Down and Derry should advance to the semi's. I think there'll be a draw to decide home advantage for the semi's. It really should be given to the two teams who have gone through to the semi's unbeaten. What it the GAA's problem in giving some reward for teams who happen to win all their games?

Id say Down will take Meath and i think Kildare may tip my own Derry.
Too many suspensions and injuries has left the Derry team threadbare.

Down & Kildare both progress to the Ring semis. Both had a huge wins over their opponents today. No coverage on RTE Radio at all which is ridiclous. RTE & the GAA don't care about the lower tier competition.

Looks like it's gonna be Down V Kerry & Kildare V Wicklow in the semi's. 2 good tight games in prospect!

Great result for Down today. Great that Paul Braniff is back from injury as he adds so much to our game. The man would get on any team in Ireland. Really looking forward to the last four with some great games instore.

Any word who plays who?

Christy Ring is a great competition with a great prize. It deserves more support and coverage.

It does deserve more support alright. And the winners should be allowed enter the early Leinster stages. There isn't much between these teams and Laois/ Antrim/Westmeath.

It's unreal to think of all the counties who now have no more intercounty hurling fixtures before the championship proper even starts. How does that promote hurling in lesser counties? And the want to do away with the league for the weaker counties???
