Speed Vans...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Yesterday evening I passed a white mobile speed camera van, It was parked on the opposite end of the road and it was facing me, I must admit i was doing close to 90 in an 80 zone.
About 2 hours later, on my homeward journey the van was in the same place, I had learned my lesson and was driving within the speed limit. I noticed that the van was in darkness, it was lighting up time and there did not seem to be anyone in the van.
My questions are
1. Will I still receive penalty points if there was no one in the van.
2. Is the camera facing from the front or back of the van.
3. How long should it take me to receive the letter in the post.

I think the speed vans are a money making exercise most of the time - there was a van spotted in belmullet ALL day in one spot - just changing which side of the road it was on......i will say that again BELMULLET.....the last car crash there must have been back in the 80's.

i'd say you'll be ok. if you were under the 90 you'll probably get away with it. i think they allow 9 over the speed limit in places. conditions like the weather, visibility, the road itself whether it was straight, junctions , corners etc etc.
also it's irrelevant whether the van is occupied or not, i think they have cameras facing both ways in the new mobile units. if you were done you'll probably get notice this week.

I had also stated in the post that i was within the speed limit the 2nd time i met the van. So i did slow down.

I think you'll find that was as much information as you need my boy. Driving like that in a county notorious for the poor quality of its roads as well as a history of lethal RTA's, 90% of which could be attributed to speeding, you just need to catch yourself on!

going 90 in an 80 zone can happen to anyone by accident. there is no one any where that has never broken the limit. It can happen. no need to give out.

i got caught by a camera not a van and it took about 2 weeks to get to me. i thought the vans only had cameras out the back. They allow a 10% discretion as they understand that circumstances can take out outside the allowed at times...therefore it would be pretty tight on you.....

That's kinda the problem.

It shouldn't happen to you.

I was done many years ago, I was doing 35 mph in a 30 mph speed zone.. The cop who stopped me was standing along the road about 20 yards inside the 40 mph sign. At the time the Guard told me he'd let me off with a caution but a week later the boys in blue came calling to my home with a summons. I immediately went to
the local station to see the cop and ask him why I got a summons when he told me he'd let me off with a caution. He wasn't having any of it, he said that the conversation that morning was recorded as this was standard procedure. He said he didn't let me off with a caution. To this day I still think he was bluffing me about the recording. I had to appear in court where the judge fined me £40 and gave me 30 days to pay.

The speedometers in cars typically overread by a few kph, so if your speedo indicated you were driving at 90 you were probably only doing 86-87. You should be just within the 10% over allowed by the guards.

N16Calling - dont get your knickers in a twist. i was only making a point that how a van could spend all day on a fairly quiet road (between blacksod and belmullet) when ive rarely seen them elsewhere. especially the evenings and at night when boy racers are about. you know the area fairly well do you?

Up here in the north i find the speed vans are just not in the right places.
This just infuriates drivers as it just reeks of a money making scam and not a safety initiative.

I could do 90mph down a backroad and never see a peeler or a peeler van but the moment i break 60mph on a road that has an overtaking lane i get done, it just doesnt make sense.

If the peelers/ garda/ govts were really serious about reducing road deaths they would have more patrol cars on the roads catching the actual dangerous driving ie stupid overtaking, pulling out of junctions into traffic, tailgating, etc.

Speed doesnt kill, yes, it is a factor in collisions but the majority of accidents are caused by those incidents ive mentioned above, speed just increases the likelihood of a death. To say that if everyone stuck to the speed limits there would be less deaths is wrong (and that is what they imply by having speed camera vans).

I believe speed camera vans to be a lazy, cheap and ineffective way of tackling road deaths. It is done to make a govt look like they are trying to reduce deaths when in reality it is an empty gesture.
