If rugby is so much bigger than every other sport in ireland why do certain posters feel the need to highlight it, and point it out to the rest of us? I think the GAA speaks for itself as the heart of every Irish community

You do know that the viewing figures for the Airtricity League are higher than those for the magners league.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Very questionable, where did you come up with these figures? I don't know anyone who watches the Airtricity league, the magners must be more popular.

Seen it in an article somewhere. Unsure of where but will try to find it.

The fact is more people watch Celtic than watch Mangners League, and more people watch Celtic than watch a load of posh fellas rolling around in the mud.

Hail Celtic! Hail the round ball! Hail hail!

I think you are missing the point yew tree, GAA is and always will be number one for me, BUT I like Rugby, soccer, athletics, and the rest, the problem on this board, tribeinbrum has pointed out, is that too many people seem to revel at the prospect of Ireland not having a good 6 nations and WC, despite this team representing THEIR country. I realise that some of the most vocal critics of rugby on here are also some of our more "chip on shoulder" and "inferiority complex" class warriors as they consistently raise the accents, schools and postcodes of our well known and better players. That alas, is something they will have come to terms with!

The only good thing about rugby games in Dublin involving ireland is that men from north and south stad proud under the tricolour and belt out our national anthem, even if they are yuppies.

If the French were bothered about this comp they'd win it almost every year.

I'm bored of the six nations.

We won the grand slam... I couldnt care less if we won it again.

I find that hard to believe in fairness Doc.

Now I've no idea what the viewing figures for the Magners League (I've very little interest in egg chasing with the exception of the big Ireland matches) are but I would imagine they're higher than LoI. If its true then that would be great!!

In terms of the overall thread there seems to be lot of who can p*** the highest going on here.

Gaelic football and soccer are the two major sports in the country. Rugby and Hurling are very strong in certain areas but non-existant in others.

Close this thread please, what a sad bunch. If either side were putting forward a constructive argument I wouldn't mind but absolute tosh from a number of people. And anyone who wants their country to get hammered in any sport doesn't deserve an opinion.

I like watching rugby and seeing Ireland do well but to suggest that it's "the heartbeat of the nation" is over-stepping the mark. Despite it becoming more mainstream and popular in the last decade or more it's still an exclusive sport in certain parts of the country. I know it's a territorial/tactical game at times but I still cant get my head around the applause players get for punting the ball downfield and into touch. Ah well - maybe that's just me, I've never actually bothered to make the effort to fully understand the rules and tactics. I hope we do well in the World Cup though - any bit of success by our sportsmen and women is welcome in these depressing times.

That brings me back to my footballing days lockjaw! I dont for one minute pretend that I understand the complex rules and regulations of rugby, the offside it a tough one for starters, but I do appreciate the mixture of skill and brute force involved. goo post though lockjaw, probably sums up what most Irish rugby fans are about.

brendtheredhand- you hit the nail on the head, the people dissing rugby are suffering from a class inferiority problem which is something they must come to terms with, if you hate someone simply because of their accent, postcode or the fact that they had a private education it genuinely is a sad reflection of someones mental health. I beleiev the problem is that these people dont look down on you the problem is you hate looking up at them and that is a problem you will have to deal with as it is simply blind hatred and there is enough of that on this island over trivial item such as religion
