For me the greatest I have seen: 1. Brian Corcoran 1999 All-Ireland Hurling Final 2. Maurice Fitzgerald 1997 All-Ireland Football Final 3. Pat Moylan 1976 All-Ireland Hurling Final 4. A couple of D J Carey Finals.

Patrique, it was a good mention of DJ Crowley in the '70 final but what he is most remembered for is the great goal he scored. Not for an entire match performance. Maurice Fitzgerald in '97 was marvellous and the best single handed winning performance ever. McDonald was very good, Mickey Linden, Eddie Keher on a couple of occassions. Seamus Moynihan-2000 replay. Pat Griffin in '70, Brian McGuigan in '03, Corcoran from Cork, Jimmy Barry Murphy for doing the job in both a hurling and football final.

Interstesting post. If the criteria is the most influence on the result then it proably was, but surely 1 pull on a high ball shouldn't define an overall great perfromance

830902 Brian Whelehans display in the 1998 all ireland final scoring 1-6 after moving to full forward he also took the ball off the line at a vital point in the first half in that game. theres not to many displays to match that one in hurling.
I agree - his performance was phenomenal. Remember he was very sick with the flu leading up to the game and was doubtful right up to the throw-in. He was also playing completely out of position and yet he totally dominated the game. This was the best individual display I've seen bar none.
I attended this game.
By half time, half of the game over, it seemed the only thing Offaly could do with Whelehan was replace him. He was AWFUL. They moved him to full forward instead and he got a few scores. News worthy yes, but not earth shattering hurling from the great man.
best player on the pitch was Canice Brennan of Kilkenny.

Pat we have had a few disagreements on elevenaside.com but I have to say at times your knowledge of games & ability to recall specific detail is breaktaking.
However, in that 1998 final did Whelehan not have to mark Pat O'Neill of Kilkenny? While never the greatest man marker O'Neill was a brilliant full back. To score 1-6 off him was no mean feat. However I do recall Billy Byrne coming on at full forward & scoring 1-2 off O'Neill in 6 minutes in the 1997 Leinster final.
Also, do you really rate Canice Brennan that highly or do you think that was a one off performance? I remember in 97, the league & championship ran at the same time. Limerick & Kilkenny were both out of the championship but met in a League play off game in Nowlan Park in August. We travelled to the game as the tannoy reader called out '6 Canice Brennan' the home crowd booed and there were shouts of 'he's only in the team cos his brother is the manager'. Gary Kirby ran him ragged the same night. Limerick won 1-17 to 0-10. So you may be right about him in that 98 final, but I'd never have Canice Brennan down as a great player.

Firstly Canice Brennan. was brilliant in 98 at centre half, and great at full back the following year against Cork, lost both of them. Glad he came on a sub in 2000 to win. Not a great hurler but had those two great days.
In 1998 O'Neill was a surprise choice at full back but was heading for an all star until the second half of the game. Whelehan scored 1-6 but I think a few of those were from frees, and the goal was hardly in the "goal of the season" bracket.
depends what you look for. To me Lar Corbett in this years final only got 3 pucks of the ball, whereas Richie Power was working hard and getting loads of ball. All 3 of Lar's pucks were goals however. I know lar had a great year, and improved immensely, but I didn't think he had a great final. He was better the year before, but the lazy critics go for eye catching statistics. Both Lar and Whelehan in 98 are examples of this.
Put it this way, O'Shaughnessy against Waterford in 07 was better than both Lar and Whelehan on the day. But it will not be remembered.
Except by me.
