Christy Ring was still winning Railway Cup medals, when they meant something, aged 42 or so.

My last competitive championship game was the day after my 44th birthday, but the other team who went on to win that championship had two players older than me in their side.

I remember Dan McCartan (Wee James' uncle & multi- All Ireland winner) playing in goals for his club's reserve team when he was well into his 50s.

He was like a bear & scared the **** out of some of the young fellas!

My Grandfather played for our club team until he was 54 as a goalkeeper and his son (my uncle) played in the same team. I wonder was it the team that beat you that day Patrique??

791812 Cheers Ollie.

Speaking of club stories, was in the local few years ago talking GAA with a few heads and this question was put to me. A player once scored two points in a row during a club game without any other player on the field touching the ball. How did it happen? Some of you may have heard this one before but see who can come up with the answer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

all i can think is he scored a point, the keeper wasted time over the kickout, the referee threw it up, and the same player caught it and kicked a 2nd point. .?

He was playing for Portlaoise against Parnells and just after he scored the point Parnells waved the deeds of a penthouse apartment at him, he signed a transfer, swapped jersies, caught the kickout and put it over the Portlaoise bar?

That story about Tom Randles is fantastic! There's an entry on wikipedia, mostly detailing his appearance for Kilgarvan at 71, and a link to the Kingdom newspaper story on it. Cracking story.

Once my club were playing a junior match in our own field and there were only 14 there so they got one of the older lads whod retired a few years before to play. He was in his late 30's/early 40's and scored 2-4 from play. Whilst wearing a pair of wellies
