In response to earlier replies - as taxpayers/ Tv lie. fee payers all sports should be treated fairly - but not, One has to listen to radio ulster on a sat. afternoon were all irish league games have an outside broadcast, both in the premier, first and second divisions of local soccer - regardless of quality these games at most have few if any spectators - they are given a large amount of air time, not only this but hockey and rugby at all levels - excell. you may say - great coverage - roll on to the sunday - and the same radio station gives a lip service, if you d0n't believe me listen in on both saturday and sunday afternoon, this sunday there are co. final and semi-finals in hurling and gaelic football in all of the northern counties with much bigger crowds and atmosphere than Distillery v Glenavon etc or Kilkeel v Civil Service in hockey or Malone v Bangor in rugby or the many many road races, this is reality and it is everwhere especially when a club is looking for funding.....
what happened in Down this year didn't happen in 1991 because most GAA followers kept their heads down in certain areas, for good reasons back then, we as gaa people shouldn't allow any injustice no matter how small, because if we accept it, then it is acceptable.......

Yeah boys what are you complaining about sure the GAA people of Dublin, Cavan and Laois had to put up with the following too and they don't have a persecution complex!

cuchulainn35 that is a great post and a great point about gaa coverage in the north. It's a disgrace that they wouldn't even show an all Ireland semi final (Dublin v Cork) on terrestrial television or radio this year. Gaels in the 6 counties deserve better.

guys if you had to put up with the likes of yer man on northern sound spouting rubbish out of him when he should be commentating on the game yis would have reason to complain.

anyway on a more serious note. that roll call of the murdered GAA men is shocking and thankfully those days are behind us. i suppose its a very slow process. i remember growing up and screaming at the tv when the irish league results programme would interrupt the normal saturday results service on BBC. I will never forget jackie Fullerton. it must be dreadful to have to listen to that type of stuff all day long.

A sad list alright Tom. You could also have mentioned

Sean Farmer (Moy, Co. Tyrone): Murdered by loyalists returning from All Ireland football semi final between Derry and Dublin 24th August 1975
Colm McCartney(Bellaghy, Co. Derry: Murdered by loyalists returning from All Ireland football semi final between Derry and Dublin 24th August 1975

Good post. Another is Aidan McAnespie shot in the back by a british soldier as he walked thru a checkpoint on his way to plyt for his club Aghaloo in 1988. The Army said that McAnespie had been hit when the weapon had discharged accidentally as a soldier was moving the gun with wet hands. Forensic evidence suggested that the fatal shot was one of three that had ricocheted off the road two metres behind McAnespie. The soldier was fined for negligent discharge of the weapon and in 1990 was given a medical discharge!!
Young Aidan is one of many and I remember well going to or from a match and the last thing you wanted to see was a UDR/Army checkpoint. You knew from hard experience that you were in for abuse and a long stand at the side of the road. The incident at Carryduff is hardly surprising when our sports minister from the DUP slates the GAA at every opportunity

You could add Sean Browne murdered in Derry by the LVF in 1997 to the list.

The sad fact of life as it USED to be up here is that all of the people killed on Tommy 1916 list were killed for one reason and one reason alone.

They were Catholics.

Absolutely nothing to do with the GAA.

In the same way that all of those GAA members killed in Kerry and elsewhere during the Irish Civil war were killed because they belonged to one side or another, pro or anti treaty.

I mean Michael Collins was not shot because he was a GAA man.

So while Tom's list is a tragedy, it has little to do with the GAA.

All of the GAA men killed by "republican" paramilitaries during the troubles, including those attacked at Hannahstown AFTER a game, on the team bus, were not killed because they were GAA players.

The fact that all of these people were in the GAA was coincidence.

Protestant paramilitaries killed innocent catholics.

And finally, I HOPE that Tommy 1916 is not equating mass murder to two "juvenile" idiots taking down flags.

The taking down of the flags instead of mass murder, illustrates how far we have travelled in the North.

Which is exactly what I have been saying for 5 days now.

Not really, can an Irish person be a true Gael without being a GAA member

Not quite Patrique.
You began for 4 days telling me that it did not happen at all because Catholic dogs dont get run over by army vehicles.
