Im not a huge RTE fan, but i think they definetely do the GAA justice with the reporting and programming. As a guess i would say that they do the soccer aertel faster probably cause more people rely on it.. For GAA, people are mostly watching it or listening to the radio.

abhainn just made a brilliant point that most of us might not like to take in. We often say the GAA is the biggest sport in Ireland, but in truth football and hurling have completely different followers. Football is number one, soccer and rugby are in between and hurling comes fourth in the list. Hurling is the no 1 sport in a handful of counties - it is in effect a minority sport, which we as a GAA family take under our wing and have an interest in as neutrals. The head of sport in RTE now is Glen Killane who was show runner of the Sunday Game for years. Saying that GAA is not a priority for them just does not stack up when we see their coverage.

The big stories in their sports headlines now are
Liam Lawrence has pleaded with Stoke not to price him out of a move to Celtic
Liverpool are still to comment on reports manager Rafael Benitez is poised to leave Anfield
North Korea have been told by FIFA that Kim Myong-Won will only be able to play as a goalkeeper in the World Cup and not in his usual role as a striker.
These are hardly important sports stories, one of them is about how there is no news yet from liverpool, how can a headline be about no comment. Obviously the third item is very important for all the north koreans living ireland, i'm sure they like the rest of us will be very dissappionted the Kim Myong-Won willnot be playing as a striker. I checked the North Korean sports news and they are leading with the Mickos last year in Wicklow story.

Re RTE coverage;Try living in Belfast when you don't have a satellite to receive RTE signals relying on the BBC and UTV for coverage, then you would have something to complain about.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw this comment - especially relating to the North Koreans but its actually a very interesting story - well worth the read!!:P

I supose RTE are pretty good as regards live coverage but they dont seem to match that up during the week with previews or reviews. It would almost appear that there are two sets of people covering GAA... one lot organising the live broadcasts and another crowd responsible for the day to day sports updates. It is obvious that to many of the RTE sports people they are just doing a job as opposed to it being a vocation. It is probably a lot easier to obtain all this golf, cricket and soccer info online..... they might actually have to communicate with people to get the GAA news. In this respect though most Irish media outlets would appear to be similar..... its lazy journalism at best mixed with a fair amount of disinterest and journalists seeing their work as a chore.

Lads, Answer me this Do you think RTE should prioritise GAA coverage during the week because (a) Its more popular than all the others, and a story about random counties match day preparations are more interesting to the the entire country than all other sports or because (b) Its the GAA, and the national broadcaster should be obliged to give GAA preference ahead of all Garrison Games no matter what the circumstances even when the other sports hold far more national interest than the Sligo preparations for Sundays semi important non knock out meeting with a county they play 3 years out of every 5?

I think they should have Gaelic news because it is the biggest sport in the country, now obviously if there is a big rugby or soccer international coming up i would think there would be huge public interest in that and it should obviously be headline news, look at the stories that have been headlines in the news today, basically nothing happened in Livverpool yet it was a headline story, there is no doubt more poeple are interested in the weekend games than the North Korean Keeper ot the fact that Liam Lawrence has pleaded with Stoke not to price him out of a move to Celtic. The are 14 county teams playing over the weekend, just work out the thousands that are going to be traveling to, watching and listening to these games yet RTE don't think there team selections are as important as the English world cup team selection.

God bless your innocence if you actually believe that Liverpool possibly sacking Rafa and An Irish international possibly joining Celtic are lesser stories on a Thursday than any of the GAA news today to the vast majority of people in the entire country today!

RTE makes good money from Premier League soccer as well. People mightn't like it but it's the way it is. They've just announced another 3 year deal for highlights rights. When Premier League teams are playing in Europe as well, RTE get good viewers for it as well. I'd be into supporting Irish myself but it's not the way of everyone. The GAA gets good coverage anyways I believe myself. There's very little coverage of the Christy Ring Cup though. I know it won't get live features, nor should it with very low crowds but there should be more reports of the games and more of a profile for the game. The same went for the club intermediate and junior c'ships, I think the latter stages could be given more support and a bit more of a profile as well.

Mikeynora County: Limerick, as you said two possible stories, so there was no news just a possible news story, Liverpool not commenting yet isn't news, when they do comment then what they say might be news but how no comment be news, a player possible getting a transfer isn't news either, when it is confirmed then it is news but the headlines yesterday were just a case of RTE trying a few headlines out of one story.

surely a preview of a new manager/comment about the impending departure of another is just as much news as is a preview of a weekend game? More people in Ireland care about Liverpool than they do about Westmeath and Wicklow, and while I'm not one of them, they are absolutely entitled to have RTE sports news reflect that fact. With 5 live matches in one weekend they are cetainly reflecting their investment/commitment to Gaelic Games.

they are still bigger stories nationally than any thing the GAA had to offer yesterday Louth. Thats just a fact, Anything to do with Liverpool or Celtic is a bigger story to more people in Ireland than a team being named for the weekend as thats a local story. Thats just a fact. Do you think people in Cork, Dublin, Donegal and Wexford are more likely to be interested in a Liverpool/Celtic story/rumour, or the naming of the Mayo team? Which do you think will gain more interest on the news to people in these counties?

Could not believe the sports news on the breakfast show on Newstalk Friday morning.First up was a report on the Kerry v Cork game, fair enough thats the biggest game this weekend, next was Mayo v Sligo then followed a report on Louth and Kildare and that was it! No mention of Armagh V Monaghan. They blatantly ignored this game. There are four provinces in Ireland , obviously Newstalk believe there are only three.
