The Soufriere Hills volcano is still erupting now though on a much lesser scale to the big one in '95 which buried the capital and forced two thirds of the islanders to flee. There is still an exclusion zone on the island as far as I know but it is still inhabited.

I have indeed. It's where my interest on Montserrat came from. I've read his other book as well - McCarthy's Bar.

Must be nearly 4 years since he died of cancer. RIP Pete McCarthy.

Lads i heard another story about where the term Culchie comes from.

Was said that it came about from country people pesant workers having to go to the back door of the house "cul an Ti" which morphed to culchie.

Also it heard there it origionated from the place name cuilshema.

Anyone here else know any stories bout where it origionated.

There is a townland on the outskirts of Lucan called 'Passifyoucan'.
The area was a crossroads of the ancient East-West route just off the Esker Riada between Dublin and Galway and the medieval North-South route between Armagh and Kilkenny.
It got the name Passifyoucan because the area was a 'black-spot' for Highwaymen/Raparees/Tories who held up wealthy travellers along the lonley spot!

It is said that as St Colmcille was leaving Derry for the last time he turned and looked back at where the city stands now. Apparently his footprints can be seen to this day along the Foyle near the old Thornhill School site somewhere.

Hey Snuf love your posts humorous to say the least. Just a quick one, if in WA you might know that Fremantle has but one e, also J.B. O'Reilly was an escapee from Fremantle prison and returned from America to help the remaining Fenians. When on the ship the ship hoisted the stars and stripes when persued so it could not be fired on. Not complaining but would never hear the last of it from the pub owner of J.B. O'Reillys bar in Perth WA where I live, they serve the best Guiness in Australia and like your goodself is a fellow Dub.

jaffacake read michael collins the bestselling biography by tim pat coogan.speaking about the big fella as most people would know he was assassinated on august 22 1922.but exactly a year to the day before he was shot on august 22 1921 he attented the wedding of tom barry.there was a photograph taken of the wedding outside the hotel.there is about 50 people in the picture.collins is the only one that lowers his head because he was suspicious that the photographer was a police informer.

Great stuff lads.

Very interested to hear more on the statue of Pearse in Argentina. I await the information eagerly! Well done!

I read in a magazine lately that the ancient word for hurling was 'baire'!!....Now we all know that 'cul baire' is goalkeeper but how the word 'keeper' came to be the old word for hurling I must investigate!
