heres a good story.i went over to graceland a few years ago as im quite an elvis fan,Theres a museum there that holds a collection of elvis personal cars, one of them is a lovely purple/wine kind of colour, its a cadillac, the guy who looks after the museum told me that back in the 60s elvis was buying a couple of cadillacs a week and giving them out to fans, friens and strangers alike, anyhow in the cadillac dealership he was considered a good customer,he was walking around the lot one day and told the salesman he was gonna buy three cadillacs that day,but he couldnt find a colour that took his fancy, the salesman not wanting to loose the sale said elvis we can get the makers to make any colour of cadillac you want, any colour replied elvis, yes said te salesman.elvis was eating a bunch of black grapes from his hand,he went over to a white cadillac and squashes the grapes onto the bonnet of the white car ...thats the colour i want said elvis..legend.the car was duly delivered and s still there today.

You might yet be right! Believe it or not there are supposed to be no less than '46' rivers that flow into Dublin City and when you take relatively unknown ones like the Camac, Pinkeen etc you could well have a river under Kilmainham!!

In relation to the Poddle under Dublin castle, Red Hugh O'Donnell and Art O'Neill escaped down a jaxx in the castle into the river hence years later the Brits blocked up the whole thing as a means of attack for the lads!
Near where it flows into the Liffey was a meeting place for 200 rebels in 1798 to attack the double guard on the bridges to meet the rebels converging on Smithfield.
Smithfield had Dublin oldest workhouse and closed after 150 years in 1969 and had housed about 10,000 Dublin orphan kids up until it closed.

In the 1700's a lad named Buck Whaley was an extremely wealthy gambler who lived in Dublin. Due to inheritances, he had an income of seven thousand pounds per year (about seven million a year at today's prices). He lived in a huge house near Stephen's Green which is now CUS (Catholic University of Ireland). He went broke and he had to leave Ireland due to gambling debts. He swore he'd be buried on Irish soil but is in fact buried in the Isle of Man in a shipload of Irish soil which he imported for the purpose.
Some boy!

O'Connell Bridge is the only traffic bridge in Europe which is wider than it is long.
The original was a wooden bridge only wide enough for a man with a horse and cart.
Dublin's second O'Connell Bridge is the one across the pond in Stephen's Green.

Incidently the Irish word for road 'bothar' comes from the words bo...cow and thar...across! It refered to the measure of the width of the road which means 'a cow across' this allowed a man to walk the road with a cow and then for the cow to turn into the side and eat the long mile!
Hence bohereen means 'a small cow across'....a calf width!

Hope ye like that!

General Michael Collins,

86th anniversary of his death today.
About 8pm marks the approximate time the fatal shot rang out.

Remember 'The Big Fella'.

The Temple Bar area got its name because it housed the first Jewish temple built in Ireland. The word 'bar' refers to the refusal of Catholics to allow the Jewish community to enter any of the adjoining commercial premises.

Remember that the next time yer chasin English 'wans' on a hens do through the streets of it!

Snuffy you haven't got a clue, it got its name from the Temple family, who lived in the area in the 17th century. Sir William Temple, provost of Trinity College Dublin in 1609, had his house and gardens in the area.

Snuffy - you mentioned 'The Big Fellah' recently.

Did you know the late & great MC represented GB & Ireland in the 1908 Olympics?

True - he competed in the classical discus and finished 8th.
