Yep!
Sunday World, Indo, Times, Liffey Champion and Lucan Newsletter.

Baptised in that church I was!.....A great day for Ireland, and I think the mother knew it even then! I didnt even cry when the water was poured on me head as far as I can remember!

Know Kew Park well. Give me a clue, initials or anything although I think I might have an idea! See, Lucan really is that small when ye remove all the blow-ins!

How do you find Irelands most beautiful village anyway?

George Bernard Shaw was the first of only 2 people to win a Nobel Prize and an oscar. He won the oscar for original screenplay for Pygmalion. Second person achieved the same feat recently enough but I can't remember who it was

Beacaire Gorm - in relation to your last post and in case you didnt know this story already:

The Red Hand allegedly originates from a story from one of Hugh O'Neill's ancestors. Apparently many moon's ago two rival chiefs were rowing across a lake or sea (Lough Neagh perhaps!?) when they spotted some land. They agreed that whoever touched the land first would be the owner. As they got nearer the shore one chief was ahead of the other. The one that was losing chopped off his own hand and threw it onto the land ensuring he touched the land first and thus became the owner.

The O'Neill clan thereafter seem to have adopted the Red Hand as their symbol/crest.

On reflection perhaps its a metaphor for how us Tyrone folk will do anything to win. The chopping off of the hand has been replaced with our 'Puke football' and our other devious methods to obtain victory according to some commentators!!!!!!

Thats the version I know of too!

....as for the latter, maybe its a symbol of finally being caught 'red handed' by refs engaging in dirty nordie tactics!

After Lucan lad Patrick Sarsfield, this might well be Irelands second best Cavalry Officer ever!

Myles Keogh (1840) of Carlow.....Story goes like this:

As an adventureous young man he went off in search of a war and joined St. Patricks Battalion of the Papal Army and fought at Ancona.
When that was all over he went to America and fought on the Union side in the Civil War. Fought in many battles and became a Colonel.
After the Civil War he stayed in the Army but took a cut in rank due to the de-mobilisation and joined the famous 7th Cavalry under Lt-Col Custer!
They came up against the Sioux Indians at The battle of Little Big Horn and every US Cavalryman on the field was wiped out. The Sioux mutilated and 'scalped' every enemy trooper except one!
A Sioux chief, 'Red Horse' described a Cavalry Officer riding a horse with four white feet as being the bravest officer he had ever seen and because of this the body of Myles Keogh of Carlow was the only US Cavalry body not mutilated.
Keoghs horse 'Comanche' was the only living thing left on the battlefield from the US side!
Keoghs two 'Papal Medal' were found to be worn by Chief 'Sitting Bull' when he died. The medals are now with Keoghs latter family.

What a man!

St.K
Beckett and Shaw are Dubs indeed.
Heaney is a nordie.
But you say Sligo claim Yeats!!....."claim" does not mean "from".....it means "claim" something that is not yours by birthright!
Yeats is a Dub!!
Dublin has these 3 Nobel Peace Prize winning literary giants, from the city of endless literary masters!

I know this starts a debate on whether your from where your born or where ya grew up but its worth pointing out that Shaw was born in Carlow, where most of his family are from! Also...Snuffy, Yeats settled in Sligo and it most certanly was his adopted home. He didnt call Dublin the 'Land of hearts desire' now did he...?

Re; Myles Keogh (1840) of Carlow. Interesting stuff. Reads a bit like Joe O'Connors 'Redemption Falls'. (Better then our one of our own, General Phil Sheridan - as my aul boy says 'now HE was a REAL H***')
