RKF - Killucan GFC were in Tralee 3 times in the late 80's and early 90's to play Kerins O'Rahillys.
Fabulous week-ends. Stayed in Benners hotel. Think its gone since.
Kerins O' had a clubhouse and facilities that were miles ahead of their time. Pre pre celtic tiger.
God be with the days.

In 1798 a Militia Officer named 'Hempenstal' was known as the 'Walking Gallows' as he used to hang United Irishmen over his shoulder and trot about Stephens Green with them gasping as they were being dragged along!!

A quick note on the Procalation.

It was printed in two halves by different small printer because of the need to keep it a secret hence the difference in font in each half.

There was a shortage in the letter 'e' and some of these were put in by hand.

Check out the capital 'E' in the word 'THE' in the title "TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND"....this E is actually an 'F' with the bottom bit added by hand!! Check it out!

14 of the main roundabouts in Galway City are named after the Tribes of Galway: Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'Arcy, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris and Skerrett.

However, only anoraks and tourists take any notice of this. When asked by a yank bedecked in bermuda shorts and dripping in cameras and a novelty Irish hat:

"We're staying in a hotel near Joyce roundabout, which way is that please?"

The response is usually "Arragh Jaysis, is dat de one near the auld petrrrill staaayshun?"

gaelantrim,

Thanks for the question.
The place is No. 16 on the famous market st called Moore St.
Answer is NO thank God. It and the ones either side have now got a preservation order. It is in a bad state. You have to look up very high to see the 1916 plaque, hard to read. Please check out the O'Rahilly 'note' plaque just around the corner in O'Rahilly Parade. An absolute "hidden" GEM!!!

The Talbet St you refer to is actually 'Talbot St.' named after Dublins unofficial saint 'Matt Talbot' the reformed alcaholic. The real patron saint of the county is St. Laurence O'Toole.

New to this site but I love this thread

The most bombed city during WWII in terms of the amount of bombs that actually fell on the city was not Berlin, London, Dresden, Stalingrad or any of the cities one might expect but the tiny Maltese city of Valletta!

Malta as a British possession was in a vital position between Axis Italy and the North African front. The Axis wanted to take the island but the Allies knew they had to hold it because of its importance in keeping the troops supplied in North Africa.

This obviously meant that the Maltese population suffered greatly but at the end of the war the entire population was awarded with the George Cross which is the highest award for civilian gallantry in the British Commonwealth.

speaking of honours, its good to see all the irish that fought with british army during WW2. being recognised along with those that fought against franco.
Is it time to honour those that supported the other sides in both conflicts, time to move on.

Indeed the same George cross is on the Maltese flag

Not clear on what you are saying here dhorse. Are you saying that nazis and spanish facists should be honoured, or am i missing something here?
