'Amhrain Na bhFainn' was written 'The Soldiers Song' in English in 1907 by Peader Kearney (uncle of Brendan Behan) and was translated by a man called Liam O'Rinn into the Irish version we all know and love, rather than the other way around!!

The song was sung at the GPO on Easter Week 1916 and the latter internment camps where it gathered popularity and then replaced 'God Save Ireland' as the national anthem.

On a side note about Kearney, he actually was at Béal Na mBláth when Collins was shot. He also wrote 'The Foggy Dew' a song beloved by the whole country!

G'won the bould Dorset St. boy!!

If you are ever on Moore St ("5 for a pound the oranges") in Dublin look for a side alley at the Parnell St end called O'Rahilly Parade and there high upon the wall is a magnificent plaque about 4' x 3'!

The plaque is a copy (using the handwriting and all) of the note written by The O'Rahilly to his mother right after he got shot and crawled into a doorway arter leading a charge whilst trying to escape from the GPO garrison and join the Four Courts garrison!

It is a fantastic plaque! Pity its so hidden away!

Check it out next time ye head up to Croker!

In 1152 the High King of Leister Diarmatt Mac Murrough lost a battle to the prince of Breffni Tiernan O' Rourke. As revenge he went to O' Rourkes castle in Dromahair in North Leitrim and kidnapped O' Rourkes wife Dervorgilla who was 20 years younger than her husband. It is widely believed that she was a willing captive as at the time O' rourke was away on pilgramage to seek penance for beating his wife with a whip.
Numerous battles ensued which eventually led to Mac Murrough being banished. He fled to England and sought help from King HenryII who although unwilling to help himself authorised Richard De Clare Earl of Pembroke to lead the FIRST Anglo-Norman incursion into Ireland.

I suppose you could say that this event changed the course of Irish history forever

hey guys im new to this thread but ya might find this interesting...i recently visited cuba and in old havana which is a protected world heritage site there is actually a street called oreilly street....at the beginning of the street there is a plaque on the wall which reads "sraid ui raigheallai, muintir dha oilean sa bhfarraige coibhlinte agus dochais ceanna...cuba agus eire...this translates as "two island people in the same sea of struggle and hope"...cuba and ireland...considering one of the main commanders of the cuban revolution "ernesto geuvara lynch" had irish descendants i thought it was a nice touch....

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned what happened at the GPO in Dublin 93 years ago today.
