There's still a Sackville Place off O'Connell St. A bomb exploded there in the early seventies if I'm not mistaken.

not only are there the irish dialects of connaught, munster and ulster but there is/was the newfoundland dialect of the irish language distinct from the other 3 which was brought to newfoundland from irish settlers escaping the famine. newfoundland is also the only place outside of ireland with its own unique irish version of its name - Talamh an Éisc - land of the fish. according to the 2001 census 10 people on the island spoke a form of gaelic

Nice one PoteenPete!

the people from newfoundland originated from Wexford and that is the type of accent they have to this day!!
The dialect they have is probably one called 'YOLA' which is an old Viking/Norse derivitave mix that is now long died off from Wexford.

An Irishman named Philip Holland invented the first submarine.
It was called 'The Fenian Ram' and I have seen it at the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier on the Hudson river in NYC.

He sought to develop it to aid in the Irish struggle against the old enemy!

Snuffy I never thought I'd say this, but you've let yourself down on the submarine front......

John Philip Holland designed and built the first submarine to be commissioned by the US Navy and the British Navy, not the first submarine.

The first military submarine was Turtle, designed by David Bushnell, and used in the American War of Independence a full 100 years before Holland's submarines were commissioned.
I'm sure that there were previous, non-military versions of submarines as well, but my knowledge doesn't stretch that far, and I'm not in the mood for trawling through google!
