Well Greengrass sometimes its nice to look back and reminisce about the players of yesterdays......Its a welcome relief from arguing about rules that sub standard refs are not able to enforce correctly....and it reminds us now of the countless many great players through the past decades that gave us untold hours of pleasure..........unlike today where you could count them on one hand....... maybe you cant think of any former great Louth players? i can think of 1 ,possible 2 in the last 60 years...lol

Always liked Dessie TC, think he's very under-rated. Anyway just said, I'd throw him in there cheekily, don't think he's that much out of his ground in that esteemed company.

In any case, I shall have to think twice about starting threads on here in the future. The exact same thread was also aired elsewhere and the three replies I recieved there were certainly a lot more incisive and clear than the sum of the replies here, Auldfella and TC's contributions aside. Is it really worthwhile putting up a thread live this if the best replies you can hope for are "loyal2theroyal dont post abt something you clearly no nothing abt" and "Stupid, utterly pointless thread"?

Don't see that the Loyals team is too far from the mark
Like all Loyals posts it is well researched, Well presented, correctly supported but with a little hint of about 5% mischief in making a point
that he knows is non conformist, but that he does and can support when pressed.

examples include
always including David Beckham in all time world X1's
Only including two Tipp hurlers in a team of the year
Omission of Joe Canning

On this occasion the controversial points are as follows

1. Henry Downey and Kieran McKeever - Can't see any huge argument against Scullion except that he maybe should be at No.4
and Tohill is also a real contender
2. No mention of Paidi ?
3. No Tyrone players - Maybe Canavan or F McGuigan

Can't see any argument with his forwards
If its genius you are after they along with Canavan and f Mcguigan have to be in any list of ten

Anyway here is mine - Not too different - I conceed its post 1980 but I can't go on what I don't know

655427 1. John O'Leary - O'Dwyers/Dublin
2. Robbie O'Malley - St. Colmcilles/Meath
3. Mick Lyons

6. Seamus Moynihan
7. Martin O'Connell - St. Michaels/Meath
8. Jack O'Shea - Cahirciveen/Kerry
9. Brian Mullins
10. Trevor Giles - Skyrne/Meath
11. Ciaran McDonald - Crossmolina/Mayo
12. Pat Spillane - Templenoe/Kerry
13. Colm Cooper - Dr. Crokes/Kerry
14. Matt O'Connor - Walsh Island/Offaly

To select a team from 1884 to now is impossible !! What have you to go on? Nothing but heresay and other opinions !! RichieJ is right as you can only pick from players you have seen yourself and todays players are fitter, better trained etc. So it is my opinion that if someone said John Joe O'Reilly is the best centre half back the G.A.A. ever had i would say i don't know because i never saw him play and i can only pick players from my time !!

This is an exceptionally hard thing to do as to compare players of different eras is almost impossible.

It's not almost impossible maigheo, it is impossible. The thread is bringing us back to 1884 when the teams were twenty one aside and the goals consisted of a goal and two uprights either side of the goal. One goal outweighed any number of points. Fellas picking teams and including players they didn't see is laughable. Loyal posts about great players he has seen. Thankfuly Loyal you posted about football because given your record on Joe Canning you know nothing about hurling. Richiej if you can only think of one great Louth footballer in the last sixty years then you don't know as much about football as you quite obviously think you do. Another person who comes on and moans about modern day footballers not being as good as the men of yesteryear . Oh and by the way were you never told about laughing at your own jokes.

greengrass yes i struggle to think of more that 1 or 2 louth greats.. certainly none of the present day sadly...and yes i honestly believe there is no present day footballer that would get on any team of the players ive seen since 1960.. not one...the nearest been dara o shea and hes now retired....the era of spilane ,jacko.,sheehy,connor. paudie. moynahan.. were the last genius ive seen.. yes cooper ,canavan,mc donald, joyce ,ect were decent players but they never gave me the satisfaction that players of earlier years did.. would any of those mentioned dislodge matt connor from a team? or sheehy? or mc guigan or sean o neill?..not in my opinion... but the beauty of it all is we are entitled to our opinions... and the team i posted is made up of players who gave me the most satisfaction to watch

Thats a very fair post Richie. I don't go back as far as you. I did see all of the great Kerry teams games in Croke Park. I would disagree with you in relation to our current footballers and teams. My memories of those years in the seventies and early eighties were of entire championships which revolved around one game that game being Kerry v Dublin. Whilst those games were huge occasions they only ever produced one game that lived up to the hype. That was the '77 semi-final The rest of the games were won at a canter. You had entire championships played which counted for nothing because most teams were very poor and could not compete with the big two. All-Ireland semi-finals were being played in front of 20,000 people and teams were losing by 5-14 to 0-07. No thanks. Not for me. Give me what we have today. The players you enjoy watching is purely a matter of personal taste. Ye I do feel that the likes of Canavan, Gooch, Joyce, Cavanagh, Mc Donnell, Mc Geeney, O Neill, Donaghy, Walsh would do well in any era. Those players you mentioned were great and some them , Matt Connor in particular are heroes of mine. But as you say correctly, it's all personal opinion.
