mattie forde - overrated?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think Mattie is up there with any of the top forwards in the country. A lot of posters seem to be saying that Mattie is selfish with the ball but I think you'll find most top forwards, such as Bradley and McConville. I'd like to see how the Gooch and all would perform if they were playing for some of the so called lesser sides like Meath or Mayo.

"He's OK I suppose!
Hasnt been tested against real opposition so far, only Meath and Laois so its hard to tell!"

If by serious opposition you mean Dublin, he will cause your backline all sorts of headaches if you meet in the final, and you would be extremely foolish to think otherwise. An on song Mattie Forde is very hard to stop

not at all he is up there with the best- how on earth can you say he is overrated, like all great forward gooch, mortimer- matties record speaks for itself on the scoring stats, never mind the begrudgers, why have people such an issue appreciating talent, would love to have him in mayo- but where would we play him- andy moran perhaps would lose out, imagine that line, mortimer, o malley, and matties forde- oh that would send shivers down anyone spine.

mattie your a legend and i hope you get another all star, you were a bold boy in the past, but you admitted it (which i greatly admire) and you have moved on.

I have to say I like Forde - he is as good as is around bar the Gooch, but there is no difference there. Sure he hit a few wides the last day against Laois but he destroyed Meath two years ago and played a fair role in this year's comeback. The fact that Wexford have a few other scorers now has taken the pressure and also a good few of the scores away from him.
Would I swap any of the Meath forwards for him, yes, in fact there are none of them I would keep instead of him. We have had no reliable freetaker since Giles - anybody remember Brian Farrell's 21m miss straight in front of the posts when we were three points up against Wexford with four minutes to go.

Hes a mighty player. Playin against Meath after injections in his leg was a testament to that. However Laois game showed hes got a few around him now with Lyng and Banville after comin into there own! The only thing I would say is that hes got a sneaky side that lets him down a bit. He goes for the cheeky jabs and stuff and hell get caught at some point int he season for it...fact

He's up there with all the players you mention. Dont believe Lyng scored against Laois. Cant say i like Forde but as a footballer he is no doubt class. Sour grapes perhaps Loyal!!

Tiobraid, what do you mean by this ridiculous comment??? Do you know Mattie Forde personally?? Unless you do and know him well, you cant make reference to a personal dislke of him and then state that he is no doubt a class footballer as well. I take it your 'dislike' of Forde is based on the impression you formed of him several years ago in Croke Park on television during the stamping incident with the Offaly full-back. It wasn't pretty but can't a player be allowed move on without armchair experts deciding that they dont like him forever.

Will Mattie be able to do it on Sunday when he comes up against some of the top corner-backs in the country? Personally I think I will be proven right but time will tell.

He's good, but nothing special. No left foot and pretty slow.

Tyrone will target him big time. He can forget about having much space. Two men on him. We're talkng about Tyrone it's what they do. They'll man mark him out of the game. I dont think he's still 100% fit either. Also if it's a wet day that'll take that nano second of pace needed away from him to turn into the gaps. Which Tyrone will swallow up.

But he is a class act from the first thread. No question. An old fashioned out and out footballer. Not a converted Basketball player, not a lump of a fella with 1000 hours a month lifting steel. An out and out gem. Skill/Talent and nothing else.

jaysus apparently mattie was going to struggle against francie bellew.and took him to the cleaners with a bad hamstring.he's pure and utter calls.he had a bad game against meath and still finished them off with two outrages points.plus he could very well go top of the scoring charts this weekend.not bad for a chap whos overated.loyal i firmly believe your like colm o rourke.bitter.wexford are in a semi because they have played well and mattie has done well too.but he hasnt hit form this year.he's probably only played 75 per cent to his ability.not bad either considering he could go top of the scoring charts.well anyway this weekend will show.and he's going to get an all star.a much better footballer than stephen bray.as is johnny doyle.best of luck wexford.

He is a good player, no doubt, but he's definately not player of the year material. If he's man of the match against tyrone, racking up a big score, well I may have to change my opinion on that but I don't see it happening. So he is a bit overrated because some people talk him up to be one of the best players of the last number of years, I don't see him having another big game against tyrone.

Now you are sayin he had a bad game against Meath?????? A few weeks ago you said he played the game of his life that day until I told you otherwise. I think this proves that you can't take a word of what you say seriously. I

I am not bitter either, I have always held the belief that Forde was not the player everyone thinks. And he has proven me to be spot on on numerous occasions.

On his day theres no one in the country that will mark him. He'll be close for man of the match...yopu heard it here first!

I see people putting Mattie in the top five or top ten forwards in the country.
In my opinion there are no superstar forwards around just now. I dont think Mattie is one of the greats but he is definitely as good as whats about in 2008. We have seen Cooper shoot wides and miss penalties of late, Paddy Bradley and Dessie Dolan have hardly added to their reputations, Meehan and Joyce had one good performance each all year, Mortimer was iffy, Clarke/McDonnell promised to deceive, Freeman was quiet, Masters dont even make the Cork team, Brogan's hamstring went at the vital moment and Tyrone have no outstanding individual forward.

I think though that Mattie did well the last day given that he was on one leg and marked by one of the great fullbacks of our time according to some. I think if he is not fuly fit though that it will be tough for him against Tyrone who will put a man marker on him. But we shall see on Sunday evening.
