(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Here is a list i thought of, anyone any other players????
Des Mythen (Wexford) Had great skill was All Star material, where did he go???
Enda Flannery (Clare) looked like the next great player to replace Baker or Lynch in midfield
Alan Markham (Clare) Fair enough played a lot of games but still you could see he could offer a lot more
James Hooban (Laois) Heard of him in 2002 playin senior for Castletown at 16 was supposed to be prolific, why hasnt he made a Laois senior
Mark Lennon (Clare) a Clare minor in 1997, looked good
Kerril Wade (Galway) played against KK in 2007, where is he gone
Aidan Ponaird (Galway) Played in club final for Athenry in 1997 looked like he had a great future
Sean Reilly (Meath) A great free taker, could have been the next Nicky Horan
Conor Gath (Offaly) was supposed to be the next great offaly foward in 2000, has disapeared since
Stephen Brown (Offaly) Played in Leinster u21 final vs KK in 2000 at 17. Built like a tank as well
Thomas Walsh (Carlow) Supposed to be good but concentrated on football then
Stephen Doyle (Wexford) Good freetaker and good skill
Ger Redser O`Grady (Tipperary) started in 2003 i think, looked good
Liam Cahill (Tipperary) burst on the scene in 96 Munster final, weaned off the radar after that
Jack Kennedy( Waterford) Looked like he had the class to be a top foward
Barry Hanley (Galway) Looked good in minor final of 2004 vs KK
Killian Cosgrove (Westmeath) started in 2005 looked to be Westmeaths next great foward until injury got him, might be back though

Yeah Des Mythen is probably one of the biggest enigma's of Wexford hurling. Now cant even make the Oulart senior team. Probably our best talent to go awry on us. Stephen Doyle is there or there about still, think he is injured. Not a great player though IMO.

Others which we thought were going to be great - John O'Connor (captain in 2004 and hardly made a team since!), Shane Carley (from mid 1990's), Ken Furlong.

John Reddan for Clare minor captain in 1997, midfield in 98 when Colin Lynch was suspended, midfield in 2002. Nowhere to be seen now
Also Richie Murray has the potential to be the best hurler off this decade

Football for all you Dubs who remember Wayne McCarthy going to be the next Charlie.

And now an average club footballer in Meath, good for a few points from frees but little else.

Great thread fonejacker you know ur hurling i'll give you that.
Would agree with patrique galway have endless hurlers that never reached their potential. Richie murry was that the galway lad that was on the same minor and L.I.T team as big joe??
Also a lot of the Limerick u21 winning 3 in a row team never reached their full potential maybe only geary lucy and saughs got near their potential.

As for the bould redser o'grady he never had the head or the temperment for the game he'd have been better if you took the hurley off him great man to win a ball but he could anything with the ball after that rearly something good, doesn't even start on the thurles sarsfield team now!

On the other extreame a hurler that i never thought would be any good was keith rossiter seen him play in a league match at wing back years ago and probablity give one of the worst proformances i've seen but look at him now in my view one of the top full backs in the country.

One club hurler i played against was Bonny Kennedy the man was a genious and never made it with tipp think he's hurls in the states now but suppose club hurling is littered with players like this....

May i add i never reached me full potential as a hurler ;)

also i think der was a maguire guy from lattin cullen that broke into the tipp team in early 99 when i was young, heard rave reviews about him at the time, Ger maguire that was his name, he looked to be gettin on a bit though at that stage

fonejacker:

Thing with these sort of players sometimes people rave review can be a bit biased but the name maguire rings a bell.... normally the rave reviews come from people affliated with the club or when players maybe aren't playing at a high standard..... Was hearing rave reviews about noel Mcgrath for years but he was playing at a high standard and making the county minor team at a young age also the rave reviews came from people all over tipperay and further a field.

I think the bench mark for most players now is if they can produce in competions like the fitzgibbon cup although not all players go to college think it offers players a great advantage in the game today.

just thought of another one lads, Leon O Connell from Wexford from the rathnure club. Was a prolific minor player. In the drawn leinster final with Kilkenny in 98 or 99 not sure, he scored all but one of wexfords points in a dramatic comeback in a thrilling minor final in croke park.
And what about Joe Mcgrath of Galway in the early 90`s for Galway.
Plenty of Talent in the lesser hurling counties but never seemed to nurture it, look at clare minors in 1997 i think only John Reddan was the only one off that team to play senior on a number of occasions for clare.

Found an interesting post on another forum tip for the top 2010 which was written in 2005

Enda McEvoy's tips for the top in 2010 from the Sunday Tribune

Best to begin, perhaps, by listing some of the players who came close to making the cut on our All Star team of 2010. So: Cork's utility defender Cian O'Connor, John McCaffrey from Dublin, Richie Foley and Wayne Hutchinson from Waterford, Richie Hogan from Kilkenny, Joey McLoughney from Tipperary and too many from Galway to mention. Not that we're trying to cover ourselves or anything.

In much the same way that a restaurant review is a freeze-frame of a particular dinner consumed in a particular eatery on a particular evening, this article constitutes an aerial portrait of one area of the hurling landscape at the close of 2005. It is an exercise in appraising potential, not a binding contract. Unike yer woman in the Scottish play, we cannot look into the seeds of time and pronounce with assurance which grain will grow and which will not. The Tribune is saying that these guys are promising youngsters now. The Tribune is not saying that these guys will automatically inherit the earth in five years' time.

Terms and conditions apply, the most salient term being that the value of shares can fall as well as rise. So if come 2010 all 15 have failed to deliver on their potential and can be located in the nearest gutter, looking at the real All Stars - well, don't blame us.

1. Adrian Power (Waterford)
Club: Ballyduff Upper Age in 2010: 22
Yep, a highly promising Waterford goalkeeper. Coming to the end of a vintage season with the county's club of the year that encompassed west Waterford medals at minor, under-21 and intermediate level, county intermediate honours and All Ireland vocational schools' success with Cork. The hero of the hour on the latter occasion, Power came off the bench to hit three late goals in the space of four minutes in the final against Tipperary. Well built, confident and blessed with a massive puckout. Still minor in 2006.

2. John Walsh (Laois)
Club: Ballinakill Age in 2010: 25
Solid performer and a fine leader who had the distinction - rare but not unprecedented for a Laoisman - of captaining St Kieran's to the All Ireland colleges' title in 2004. In the long run, may well end up wearing the number six jersey for his county. In the short term, is more likely to be asked to learn his trade at corner-back. Which is where we've placed him.

3. Paul Cleary (Offaly)
Club: Birr Age in 2010: 24
Was fast-tracked to the big time this summer; two months after showing up well on the St Brendan's team that ran eventual champions St Flannan's close in the All Ireland colleges' semi-final, he came on for Offaly against Kilkenny at Croke Park. As first sub too. Big, strong and well able to hurl, has established himself as his club's first-choice full-back.

4. Michael Fennelly (Kilkenny)
Club: Ballyhale Shamrocks Age in 2010: 25
The possessor of two All Ireland minor and one under-21 medal, and did more than most to try and make it two under-21 medals with a powerful second-half performance against Galway in September's decider in Limerick. A recent addition to the Kilkenny senior panel, he's played up front for his club and for Cork IT but may eventually grow into the centre-back spot.

continued...

5. Shane O'Neill (Cork)
Club: Bishopstown Age in 2010: 24
Captained the county minor team in 2004 and wore the number 27 jersey on All Ireland final day in 2005. Impressive striker left and right, quick wrists, excellent attitude and a fine athlete. A driving force with UCC this season. If it were any other half-back line he was trying to break into, he might already have made it.

6. Tomás Brady (Dublin)
Club: Na Fianna Age in 2010: 23
Outstanding as Dublin carried off their first Leinster minor title since 1983; Brady was vice-captain. A younger version of Seanie McMahon with many of the great man's attributes, including physique, power in the air and good striking off both sides. Excels at hooking and blocking as well. Now in UCD, which should only help his progress.

7. Michael Rice (Kilkenny)
Club: Carrickshock Age in 2010: 27
Inspirational captain when Kilkenny won the All Ireland minor title in 2002. Plagued by injury in the meantime but, like Fennelly, was blameless for the county's defeat in the All Ireland under-21 final. Highly versatile, if probably at his best when processing quick ball from midfield.

8. Brendan Maher (Tipperary)
Club: Borris-Ileigh Age in 2010: 21
Sibling of Martin's, cousin of Philip's. Hit 0-8 (0-5 of it from play) for St Joseph's of Borrisoleigh in a Harty Cup fixture this time last year, a feat which moved the Irish Examiner to describe him as a "player of exceptional ability", and played an influential role in his club's north Tipp SHC triumph during the summer. Bags of time on his side.

9. Cathal Naughton (Cork)
Club: Newtownshandrum Age in 2010: 23
A mini Jerry O'Connor. Can play at corner-forward, is arguably best suited to the wing but with Newtown at the moment he's deployed at midfield, where he has the space to do what Newtown do so well. Was on the books at Notts Forest, which cost him a year's hurling, but has returned in style. The Other Ger Cunningham, his former coach, will eat several hats if Naughton doesn't go on to bigger things.

10. Colin Ryan (Clare)
Club: Newmarket on Fergus Age in 2010: 22
Key member of the St Flannan's side that captured the All Ireland colleges' crown, having been an obvious star in the making at Dean Ryan Cup level a couple of seasons ago. Fast, mobile and takes up good positions. Reliable freetaker who can also do a job at midfield. Minor again in 2006.

11. Joe Canning (Galway)
Club: Portumna Age in 2010: 22
Finally a brilliant young Galway forward who isn't built like the brilliant young Galway forwards of recent years; Henry Shefflin is the obvious touchstone. If there's a weakness in Canning's game it has yet to be detected. Has size, has strength and while he isn't a speed merchant is no slouch either. Whether he'll be more effective at centre-forward or closer to goal is a debate for another day. Next year he'll be going for his third All Ireland minor medal in a row, but Conor Hayes has already publicly signalled his interest.

12. Ray McLoughney (Tipperary)
Club: Kilruane McDonaghs Age in 2010: 23
Better known up to now as a centre-back, the position from which he captained the Tipp minors this year and led Borrisokane CC to All Ireland success, yet the indications are that it's up front he'll find his true calling. Well built, plenty of skill and can magic scores out of nothing - as he did for Kilruane in this year's county minor final when he killed a dropping ball stone dead, let it roll down his hurley and sent it over the opposition bar for a glorious point.

13. Kerril Wade (Galway)
Club: Sarsfields Age in 2010: 24
Unusual name, unusually mature young man. Wade came straight out of minor to help Galway to All Ireland under-21 glory in 2005, giving no indication that he was one of the youngest members of the team. Quite the reverse, actually, as it was his late point that won the final. Consistently accurate freetaker and knows where the net is; in a challenge match with the county minors one night he proceeded to hit 3-12.

14. Eoin Ryan (Limerick)
Club: Kilmallock Age in 2010: 23
A scoring forward of the type few counties need so badly as Limerick do. Compiled a total of 4-34 on the way to the All Ireland minor final this year, including 2-7 out of his team's 2-9 in the defeat of Waterford, and managed another six points in the Croke Park curtainraiser. Natural scorer with a clean first touch and deceptive speed. Current member of the county senior football panel, however. Oh dear.

15. Des Mythen (Wexford)
Club: Oulart the Ballagh Age in 2010: 27
Smashing little hurler who banished worries about his lack of heft with a fine debut season. Created the only goal of the Leinster final for himself by blocking down an opponent before finishing calmly, and was one of the very few Wexford men to emerge with credit from the All Ireland quarter-final mauling by Clare, hitting three points from play. Seeks to put a message on every ball he hits. Almost invariably succeeds.
