If you can, bring a couple of youngs lads to your games to act as linesmen because in club football each team has a sideline and they just give everything to their team.

Thinking of getting into the business myself but I'm only 19. Do the courses go on for long and are there different categories?

No....dammon in wexford if clubs do not provide a referee they play all of their league games away so I was with 7 other adults who will now go on to referee U12 and U14 matches this year and welll I'll be refereeing practice matches in underage with my club and in my clubs blitzes and in other clubs blitzes and am considering appyling for a mentor spot with the Cul Camps as my summer job. Sorry if I seem very selfish just thought id explain that:)

Jaysis you're starting young!

Dellboy what's the story with referees courses in Meath? Does it take long to get qualified?

I'm thinking of going into refereeing. I got my basic coaching course done a few weeks ago because I'm helping out with the u8s. Would be handy if I could do both.

Refs in Donegal used to get 25 euro a game, but I think that's changed to 30 a game now. At Senior that's the minimum, or 50 cent a mile, whichever is greater. Plus you also get to hear some great one liners. They'll all be aimed at you and your parentage, eyesight, physical condition etc, but you'll be laughing so much you'll be crying.

i ref the 10s and under in my club myself and all i could say is don't worry, people really won't care at that age. take as many u8 games as you can at the very start, even the kids don't know the rules and there's no pressure. at u10 the kids will get a bit more edgy and will talk back, tell them you'll put them off for it, especially for bad language. IF, and it probably won't happen, parents or mentors get a bit angry and start shouting tell them its only u10s or 8s and it really doesn't matter, sure if its the quickstart programme or one of those there won't even be score kept so don't worry that you're messing up something important.
relax and enjoy it, the best advice i can give is learn something from every game, go over after the games and ask the mentors which decisions you made wrong and you'll never make that mistake again.

I always have respect for refs that respect me as a player. I expect a ref to make mistakes but I also expect him to put in as much effort as I do. Stay playing yourself also. A ref that has an understanding of the dynamics of the game will make better calls. Don't take abuse from anybody.

Hope your joking by telling someone to go over to managers after a game and sked them what your bad points where . What happens if a team loses a game by a point or 2 and a manager was not happy you would stand and get grief of him . I would tell any ref once game is over go straight off pitch let the assessers decide your game not managers.
