omaghjoe:

To be a catholic you have to believe in catholic spirituality, teaching and morality. I don't think 100% of the people of Spain fall into that category, so your saying doesn't make sense.

I would have thought their are far more important requirements to make someone a prime candidate for becoming a presbyterian than simply disagreeing with this saying, e.g. a belief in a deity or god.

To be a catholic , dont you have to truly believe in the ressurection, the assumption and transubstantiation,, surely no sane Spaniard does

I was touched by your sermon nocky, brought a tear to my eye and I can really see the humanist coming out in you. But every last word you said confirmed my opinion that you have two sets of rules. All of the humanist values that you want to impart can take place in a non religious setting, just meet the people you wish to sympathise with or congratulate in their own homes or somewhere else. The mumbo jumbo that you have had to listen to nocky I don't know how you could have put up with it.

sam2008, so you wouldn't attend the funeral or burial of one of your relatives if it took place in a church? I'm sorry, but I find that hard to believe.

Please explain why you feel I would make a great presbyterian omaghjoe. I must admit I never studied their theology in detail, I sort of dismissed them as being almost identical to catholicism, apart from their different views on transubstantiation, the idolisation of Mary and a stricter observance of the sabbath.

Look im 14 i dont agree with all of the churches rituals/beliefs but when i look apon other religions there is fault so to be frank, there is no perfect religion! I must say that the church has collapsed a whole lot down to community...years ago ye would have the odd priest playing or if above the age mentoring the young fellas......Reform needs to be taken of course and the catholic church needs to get its priorities straight and moving otherwise 50 years time there will be social atheist places rather than catholic churches because of the enlightment looking at the child sex abuse scandal wondering how can you place trust in the church when this is what happens

I consider myself a christian more than a catholic, but attend mass maybe 5 times a year (weddings, anniversaries etc). i dont believe you need to sit there listening to some old man preaching to you about stuff he hasnt a clue about , ( most are so out of touch with the real world its unreal ) to be a decent person.

slightly off topic but i remember making my confirmation & rhyming off what ever we were to say but in reality not knowing the meaning of any of it or what was going on at all- 12 is far to young to "confirm" yourself as a member- it should be a least 16 IMO

From my own personal experience out of everyone it is Atheists who push their beliefs, or lack of, onto others. Certainly more than any religion does. It's even evident in this thread, people who may be Catholic or believe in God being ridiculed by those who don't. Everyone has a right to their faith and this should be respected. You can't bleat for respect for not believing while at the same time damning those that do have faith

Have you ever wondered what the Legions of Irish missionaries were doing all over the World, i know you're going to come back and tell me they did a lot of good in education etc, but why the need to get people to switch over to an alien religion?

REALLY Pomeroy? Seriously? The catholic church have tried to force their own twisted views on morality onto the rest of us for centuries and continue to do so.

Remember the divorce referendum? Contraception? Their views on homosexuality? Why are we (non-catholics) prohibited from going to the pub on good friday? Why are young children forced into attending mass and swearing oaths to god (communion, confirmation, etc.) at such young ages? Why does the catholic church control 93% of our national schools, and many of our hospitals? Here in Ireland it even tried to block the use of an important cancer drug as the drug also required the use of contraceptives! Judges are required to swear oaths to god, our constitution is full of references to this god. The catholic church would impose canon law into Ireland if it could at all, just as the hierarchy are attempted to hide child abuse behind it.

Don't get me started on Islam and the rest of them.

Nocky your one of these new breed of arrogant Athetists like Richard Dawkins, if people want to believe that a nice man lives in the sky and that we're all going to live for ever and ever then let them. We dont have to ram it down there throats that they believe in fairytales.
