Heavy Championship defeats

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Was just thinking of some of the games Ive seen the Dubs in over the years, and two that sprung to mind were the games against London in '04 and Westmeath last summer. They stood out as the Dubs won by 27 points in both games. Does anyone know what the biggest ever margin of victory was in a championship match? I also went to KK V offaly in 2005 and remember KK dishing out the mother and father of all hidings!

Any help with the above would be much appreciated! Even if you dont know, then what was the biggest win/defeat your county has had in the championship?

Kerry beat Clare 9-21 to 1-6 in the Munster Championship in 1981. Must be close enough to the record win in football.

Pretty much every county has shipped some heavy defeats down through the years........even Kerry got whalloped by Meath in 2001.

Most of us can remember our county getting hammered (some of us more recently than others!) and it is horrible but sure that's sport and it adds to the sensation of winning.

Hahaha man....2003 Leinster champions. Great day for Laois and football generally. Everyone loves seeing a new team come through.

The best days I've had (besides the Dubs) have been days like that where a team came from years of defeat to claim victory. Clare 1995, Wexford 1996, Armagh 2002, Laois/Tyrone 2003, Westmeath 2004 were some of the best scenes I've witnessed. The sheer joy that these teams gave their followers was exceptional and uplifting even for a neutral.

I remember Derry gave Down some beating in Newry in 93 en route to winning the All Ireland.

Down got revenge the next year in the classic at Celtic Park.

In 1998 or 1999 Cork footballers flogged Waterford in Dungarvan in the Munster championship 3-23 to 0-4 which is 28 points the winning margin.

From Kilkenny we've been on the good side of a lot of wallopings in hurling and the reverse in football.

Fair enough Fr Ted - we've taken one or two hidings in the not too distant past too! Interesting to see some of the responses, didnt realise that Kerry racked up 9-21 in a munster championship game. As good as they are right now, you just couldnt see that happening again in Munster.

MesAmis you mentioned a few classic days out at Croker there, another favourite of mine was Fermanagh's win against Armagh in 2004. Remember it like it was yesterday. When Tom Brewster got the winning score, the roof almost came off croker! And the pitch invasion afterwards delayed the start of the Mayo-Tyrone match by about half an hour afterwards - Great memories!

Dub hurlers have taken some hammerings over the years. Can think of a number of 25/26 point defeats and i'm sure there's worse if I was masochistic enough to delve!

I remember us getting stuffed 3-24 to 3-5 by Galway down in Tuam in 2001, some of our players left the field in tears. Wasn't far off them myself!

I cant remember the year or the exact score but i remember Galway beating Sligo in a championship match in the old Pearse stadium sometime in the late 80s i think.( I was a young lad at the time). The score i believe was something like 6-19 to 4points.Again if anyone knows the correct score can you let me know as i like to remind my Dad about this game from time to time.

Finally a post i can contribute to! i have watched Westmeath get beat up a stick more times than i care to remember, but they are still my team so i would never let them down! it just makes the odd victory that does come our way the more sweeter, like Offaly in Tullamore in 2008!!!

Cork gave us quite the trimming last summer in the AI quarter final. Thankfully those kind souls Kerry inflicted a worse whipping on Dublin the next day to take some of the heat off us.

Yeah I remember that game laoch...in patches. I'd downed a bottle of Bucky along with some Armagh gentlemen the morning of the match following a heavy rip the night before. It dulled the pain of the defeat somewhat.
