Darragh Ó Sé retires

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think Pomeroy man is just throwing a sarcastic parallel to the comments that Brian Dooher has been recieving from other contributers.

There is no doubt that Ó S/e was a fantastic player who won many a midfield battle over a lengthy period of time against some great players. Power, pace and very direct in all that he tried to do.

However, I disagree with Frederickwood in that all great players are no angels, in the sense that Ó Sé was cynical, extremely cynical at times. Particularly in his later years when other players began to outplay him

Darragh was a midfielder and a great one. He has had his disciplinary problems but the role he played will always result in the occasional skirmish. I believe he would have started on any Tyrone team over the past 10 years if he had been available to us. Tyrone often won games were they were not were dominant in midfield battles. Kerry won many games becuase they were dominant in the middle of the park and because of Darragh. Darraghs fingerprints are on every Sam Maguire in Kerry since 1998 and his legacy shall last well into the future. Kerry will find him difficult to replace.

Wonder could he have a word with The Gooch and persuade him to retire too.

565537 Henry1 - he had a great game in the 2008 final (when he was 33), do you not recall a left footed point in the second half?

So does one left footed point make him man of the match? Enda McGinley, who he was supposed to be marking that day, scored the same amount and, as I have referred to previously, ran rings around him as well!

Well said JB.

Could you draw this to HENRY'S attention when he gets back from Specsavers after correcting his tunnel vision (eyes for seeing Tyrone players only).

Henry 1 - think you said that all he did was catch kick outs only when unmarked. I am pointing out that there was a lot more than that to his game, and he did more in that All-Ireland (deservedly won by Tyrone btw) than just chase McGinley. In any case the ultimate accolade is the respect of your peers, and I see that Kevin Walsh has added his voice to those of Whelan and McGrane (and I'm sure that there are more).

I was thinking today off players in his standard over a prolonged period. 20 years. Only 2 others would stand on the tiop pedestal. Maurice Fitzgearld from 87 to 2001 and Peter Canavan. The 2 I mention with him have something in common. Both laboured for a long time as the counties main forward and leading light. Both got there reward to the end off there carear. Most great players are cynical O Se and Canavan put up with a lot. I always remember Canavan getting the worst treatment against Meath semi 96. Maurice I believe is only man who I never seen throw a belt.
O Se is a model to any young fella, a leader on the pitch. Yes he threw the odd belt but how many did he recieve. Maurice played south kerry final last year still going.
To those who want other names, they are all highly regarded Moynihan and Dooher name a few but not quite the trio I named.

Dara was one of the greats at midfield oevr his career. He really played his part in a fine Kerry team and he had the tremendous ability to make opponents look ordinary. He was a great passer of the ball and gave class ball into his inside forwards. For a big man he had a superb pass with just one hop for his forwards. He made it easier for them with his superb overall play, a great fielder and a scorer and a passer. he had it all. Maith thu, Dara.

There's an excellent article on the Irish Times website by Tom Humphries about Dara. It sums up what DOS was about and what a legend he was.

Good luck Dara on your retitement, that is one hell of a record in sixteen years. I doubt if that will ever again be equalled by anyone in this day and age. You gave it all year in year out and came back again and again even after losing those games to tyrone and armagh. You finished off in style last year even after that shamefull treatment you got on the latelate show from pat kenny (how you didnt walk off that night i dont know) and even though you didnt beat tyrone at least you were there every time to try and stop them. The script could not be written any better as you left a winner by beating your old enemy cork last september and not a tyrone footballer in sight. Thanks for the memories.

Best midfielder in the last 25 years... A true leader on the field... Kerry are never easy to beat but having O Se in the middle of the park was such an advantage both actually and phsycologically.... He will manage Kerry in the future
