Boyd breezes past Larsson's record

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In a feeble attempt to convince others that the their club has finally turned its back on sectarianism Rangers fans like to list the names of their Catholic players. To do so misses the point entirely.

This is exactly the stuff im talking about. 'Feeble attempt', as if they are secretly burning irish flags down in the cellar! Its making it into something it isnt. Same old story. Do you also hate athletico bilbao for their policy of signing only basque players? Celtic and rangers have been and always will be pub-talker's clubs. Guys who have more interest in some exaggerated nonsense than the football the club plays

Master, quite disingenuous to take part of my quote and comment on it and not the other. I also see there is no rebuttal of the old Hibs sectarian policy. I do not care for religion, never have and follow Celtic as my father did and his father. I accept that there are bigots within the ranks of Celtic supporters but to immediately equate supporting Celtic as akin to being a bigot is wrong.

Too funny....

CELTIC have thrown their full financial muscle behind an astonishing bid to land Rangers idol Kris Boyd.
Hoops chiefs will match the £30,000 a week on offer from Birmingham City gaffer Alex McLeish.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell is ready to splash out a £1million signing-on fee to persuade Boyd to turn his back on Gers and sign for their biggest rivals.

Lawwell has been in touch with the player's camp over the last week and has refused to let his pursuit of prolific striker Boyd drop.

Now the 26-year-old hitman will today return from a family holiday in Tenerife with his mind in a whirl over his football future.

Rangers goal machine Boyd is fully aware of the repercussions of agreeing to swap the Light Blues for the Hoops.

It's the most important move of his career and every option must be pondered.

Boyd, who scored 26 goals for the SPL champs last season, is available on a free transfer.

If Celtic supremo Lawwell pulls off the daring cloak and dagger swoop with the full backing of caretaker boss Neil Lennon it would be the most sensational Old Firm transfer since Mo Johnston snubbed the Hoops and joined Gers instead in 1989.

Back then Graeme Souness smashed down the religious barrier and landed Rangers' first high-profile Catholic signing.

Now, 21 years on, Celtic's driven desire to halt Gers' title march at two-in- a-row sees them pursuing Boyd in the knowledge that his capture would be a massive bodyblow to the skint champions.

Boyd has felt undervalued at Gers in recent seasons as the salary packages dished out to stars like both Steven Davis and Pedro Mendes dwarfed those of the man who broke Celtic icon Henrik Larsson's SPL scoring record.

He cut a forlorn figure at the Ibrox title party after the win at Hibs following another devastating demotion to the bench.

Now, as he sifts through offers from Turks Kayserispor and the Premier League - with Newcastle United high on the list of moves he'd crave if he has to go - Boyd has been given a chance to take the most astonishing path out of Ibrox of all.

Here is something even funnier..

Celtic have categorically denied they are preparing a sensational swoop for Rangers striker Kris Boyd.

Reports claimed the Parkhead club were set to offer the Scottish Premier League's record goalscorer £30,000 a week and a £1million signing-on fee to defect from the Hoops' arch-rivals.

Celtic wasted no time quashing that speculation this morning, issuing a statement on the club's official website which read: "Welcome to the silly season.

"We can categorically state that Kris Boyd has never been a target for Celtic and at no time have we ever attempted to sign him.

"We will not, repeat NOT, be making a bid for the player."

Boyd joining Celtic would have caused arguably the biggest transfer storm in Scotland since Maurice Johnston snubbed Celtic for Rangers in 1989.

The 26-year-old is out of contract this summer and is still deciding whether to sign a new deal at Ibrox.

He has been strongly tipped to join Birmingham, with Blues boss Alex McLeish a known admirer having come close in January last year to signing the man he brought to Rangers before the move broke down over personal terms.

Turkish outfit Kayserispor have also been linked with the player.

It seems that Celtic captain Scott Brown has a very different view of Boyds abilities compared to some posters here - In his own words

"I know Boydy from Scotland and his ability in front of goal is FRIGHTENING."

I imagine he has more than henrik larsson too, but that doesnt change the fact that larsson is the no.2 striker of all time in scotland.

ah great to see a fine thread about an excellent player resurrected

seems celtic could have done with kris boyd last night.

Best wishes to both Scott McDonald ands Kris Boyd at Middlesborugh. Its a huge step up from scotland but McDonald seems to have stepped up to the plate alreday so to speak and is playing well. hopefully Boyd can do the same

I dont get the point some of you are making. Larsson went to Barcelona and United, Boyd is at middlesbourgh. I thought Real Madrid would have been after him the way some of you boys are talking.

The "record" is flawed. Larson actually scored more goals in less games the Boyd. In Larsons first year the league wasn't known as the SPL therefore his goals from that season are not counted. Boyd scored his goals with 2 clubs whilst Larson got all his with Celtic. Finally Boyd was the penalty taker for Rangers which greatly boosted his statistics, anyone who knows anything about Scottish Soccer knows that Rangers get a lot of penaltys. The standard joke is if you meet a Rangers Fan and ask him what was their result if he says nil all. Your next question is ,"Who missed the penalty for ye". Anyhow Henke went on to win a European Champions medal and play with both Man. Utd. and Barcelona funny but neither of them seemed particularly interested in good old Boydchenko.

Surprised you think Boyds achievement is lessened because he played for two clubs, in fact this makes his achievement even more impressive as anyone knows it is alot harder to get goals if you dont play for celtic or rangers as you get far less chances.

as for your usual masonic lodge conspiracies, time to take your tablets....

Boyd is a tube as his form in the Championship shows. He scored most of his SPL goals against the lower teams and I think only scored once or twice against Celtic for Rangers. Henrik scored 2 in the UEFA Cup Final and set up the winner for Barca in the Champions League final; this must go down as the studiest thread EVER on HS.

ANTHONY STOKES checked in at Parkhead last night and vowed: I'll be Celtic's answer to Kris Boyd.

The Irish striker sealed his £1.2million switch from Hibs to fulfil a lifelong ambition and said: "I have watched Kris Boyd a lot and I think he could easily play in the Premiership.

"He might look lazy at times but he gets himself in goalscoring positions.

"And I won't mind being called lazy if I can score as many goals. For me it's about getting in the box and getting on the end of chances. At Hibs, the gaffer said he wanted me to work harder on my game, I need to do that.

"But as a striker you get judged by goals. I'd like to think I could fill the gap left by Robbie Keane. I'm not going to score from midfield or out on the wing - I want to do my work in the box.

So What. No one ever denied the guy was a good goal poacher quite obviously his record speaks for itself but he couldn't hold candle light to Henrik. So far he is struggling to score at Middlesboro, as someone earlier mentioned most of his goals came against lower ranked SPL teams and obviously he is finding it tougher in the Championship. Personally I have nothing at all against the guy and I'd be quite happy for him to do well in Middlesborough but dont compare him to Henrik.
