Boyd breezes past Larsson's record

SPL review: Kris Boyd smashed Henrik Larsson's record as the Clydesdale Bank Premier League's top goalscorer after netting an incredible five goals as Dundee United crashed to a 7-1 defeat at Rangers.

Not content to simply level the Celtic legend's tally of 158 - he ended the match having taken his own tally to 160 goals in Scottish football's top-flight.

Damien Casalinuovo pulled a goal back for United and Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra were also on the scoresheet but the night belonged to Boyd - with new Scotland boss Craig Levein given plenty of food for thought in the stands.

The Scottish champions now boast a seven-point lead at the summit ahead of Sunday's Old Firm derby, with the only sour point a red card for Kenny Miller which rules him out of the clash with the Hoops.

Congratualtions to Kris... A great achievement from a truly great player

And only one of those goals came against Celtic monkey. Boyd is a great man to score against small teams but as well as his failure vs. Celtic he also has a dismal record in Europe and internationally (he quit the Scottish team because Burley deemed him not good enough to start). He is frequently dropped by his manager for bigger games as he offers nothing in general play.

He was afraid to move to Birmingham last year because that would bring him outside of his comfort zone and he wouldn't get to face St. Mirren, Falkirk etc. week-in, week-out. Any striker worth his salt who plays with one of the Old Firm in Scotland will score bags of goals, Boyd is nothing special. He has also played in far more SPL games than Larsson did.

Even staunch Rangers fans admit Boyd is not fit to lace Larsson's boots.

Never a great player but an exceptional goalscorer. Has been treated quite badly by Rangers over the years, often unfairly dropped also they tried to get rid of him a couple of times. Tends to score heavily against weaker teams but has not scored in either Old Firm or European Games yet. Is regular penalty taker and as Rangers are awarded an inordinate amount of penalties by members of the masonic lodge this has boosted his scoring numbers. Hard to believe from reading Scottish papers but he has not yet exceeded Henriks tally. The record they are talking about is the SPL which only started in 1998, Henrik was playing and scoring for Celtic in the old Scottish League that proceeded the SPL. Boyds goals were scored over 9 seasons with 2 Clubs, Henriks over 7 with 1 Club. Henriks total is 242 in 315 games. I am well aware that my esteemed friend bad.monkey is merely **** stirring but I do acknowledge that Boyd is a tremendous goalscorer, fair dues to him, he is out of contract at the end of this season and hopefully will be on his way out of Rangers, must admit I'd be glad to see the back of him.

I think that Boyd was shown up today as a poor player. Back a few years ago when Celtic had the likes of Larsson, Moravcik and Sutton and Rangers with Lovenkrands, Amoruso etc. Boyd would have been a nobody in the most intense derby match of them all.

Did anyone see Boyds celebration after he equalled the record. There is a picture of it in yesterdays Indo. He ran away with his tongue out mimicking the Great Swedes trademark celebration. He has some neck. He wouldn't be fit to clean the dirt from Henriks boots

Sorry to rain on your insincere parade but when he has:

1. Played on the 3rd best team in the World Cup
2. Played for the biggest club team in Spain - won 1 Champions League & 2 La Liga
3. Played for the biggest club team in England
4. Played such a big part in so many international tournaments

then yes (outside of the mickey mouse league of Europe), we will all concur....

It's one thing sitting on the fence but insulting Larson, one of the most exciting footballers in the World, is beneath even your own ambigous standards. Sad really...

GerryMc Do you not know that membership of the Masonic Lodge is a prerequisite for a referee to get big games in Scotland. Last Old Firm Ref agrees AFTER MATCH that he should have awarded a penalty to Celtic, no doubt today's Ref will agree he should not have disallowed Celtic's first goal. Its been like that for years. Anyhow we will win our game in hand and will be just 4 points behind so its still all to play for. Last point on the Boyd V Henke debate, even if you artificially limit the debate to the SPL and ignore the 40 or 50 penalties that Boyd has scored, it still took him 263 games to do what Henke did in 186
