I wasnt being pedantic, I feel its a valid point. I have read through the Social Welfare thread thoroughly and there is a maximum of 4 posters who come across as racist. And one or two are on the wind up.. Duffy expressed an opinion and was branded a racist, then patrique felt the need to start a thread on how the Irish are racist and you agree by saying there is a problem with racism in the country based on these few posts?? Am I missing something here or is this a massive contradiction?

I dont see why being of the opinion that immigrants shouldnt be entitled to social welfare in Ireland makes you a racist, surely it can be just an opinion without being anything more sinister?

Why is it unreasonable say that there is a problem with racism in Ireland? Without including my own personal observations of racism in this country, which I haven't discussed, there is plenty of it plain to see on these boards. It's not just the Social Welfare thread either Jon, check the recent Arsene Wenger and Swiss Minarets threads for more blatant racism. Thankfully the racists appear to be in the minority, as many posters have criticised the racist, bigoted, xenophobic, sectarian posts.

As myself and others pointed out, the reason you are not eligable to receive social welfare is (i) your age (ii) you live at home with parents who earn over the threshold (iii) you haven't worked for long enough to earn enough stamps. Your blaming of foreign nationals, or even bringing foreign nationals into the debate, was uncalled for. The situation became worse when other posters took your comments and went further, saying foreign nationals were the cause of all our problems and should be deported, etc. __________Dell your posts on both the Social Welfare and Arsene Wenger threads should have seen you banned.

nocky I have read through the threads you mentioned and can honestly say that any sign of racism is very minimal at best (or should that be worst?) I actually thought the Minarets thread contained some great discussion.
I cannot see how anyone could conclude that Ireland has a racism problem based on the discussions on this board unless they take opinions on race as being racist. Perhaps im just not as sensitive to the issue as you may be or perhaps it is merely a difference of opinion but I think much like the issue of sexism, racism has become a cry that is heard too often and has lost any sense of perspective.

JonSmith, people who express prejudiced opinions on race are racist. It is of course possible to have an opinion on racial matters which isn't discriminatory or racist, but you seem to have a far different view on what is racist than myself and others do. Unfounded negative stereotyping of any ethnic group of people is racism in my mind. Eastern Europeans and other immigrants, Muslims and the French have all been stereotyped by a number of posters on here in the last week.

I also think some of the worst posts have been removed from those threads, I remember a particularly disgusting one from a Mayo poster on the Social Welfare thread which I cannot find.
