Cross border shopping

Its called the free market. I have no problem shopping in the north. Times are tough and any saving I can make to help get through the hard times I'll take.

Us nordies have been giving yous money hand over fist for diesel petrol and everything else for years when the pound was stronger so as they say you got to take the rough with the smooth.... It wouldnt have been long ago that Newry, Derry would ahve been struggling due to nordies going south. There is hardly a filling station open along the border on the north side due to this.

2. Wal mart have made $8.9bn profit in the first nine months of this year how does this help the 26 county economy or for that matter the 6 county economy
other than creating one job for every three that is lost in locally owned business

Apologies if you feel this is a niave view

Just listening to Joe Duffy now and there is a debate about milk. A company based in Omagh has made some inroads into the Southern diary market and Southern Irish farmers and producers are up in arms spouting about "imported milk", "foreign milk" "non-Irish milk" etc. I have really had my fill of these partitionist whingers moaning about cross border shopping, tirades against Northern imports etc. It is bitter nasty 26 county politics of the worst order. There are many Southern based employees of this Omagh diary company who pay their taxes, PRSI in the South and who are fuming that the National Diary Council in the South is running ads not to buy Northern milk. If Northern people stopped going South on holiday every year MANY MANY hotels and resort spas would go out of business BUT I don't hear too many Bord Failte people telling Northerners not to come South. This anti-Northern campaign is getting naster with implications that the North is NOT Irish and is as foreign as Greece or Norway. There are many here in the North who are getting very angry at this and just might think twice before looking to book a holiday break. Let's face it if we wanted value for money we would stay in the North or take a short boat trip to Scotland where weekend breaks are cheaper and our money goes further. The South is turning into a rotten, angry, bitter, cold, unfriendly jealous place. A lot of you need to take that chip off your shoulder. Feeling ****** off? Well take your ire out on a corrupt government who has spent billions bailing the bankers and developers out and handed YOU the bill. Don't take your anger out on Northern people or businesses.

Twist

1. Where did I mention the English - did'nt realise Walmart were an English company
2. I mentioned that spending money in the North benefits the UK exchequer whereas spending money in ROI benefits the Irish exchequer and eases the tax burden
in ROI - Do you dispute this ? - THAT IS MY POINT
3. What has reilgion got to do with anything ? Tesco are a Public company listed on the London Stock market. How do you know the religon of the shareholders?
4. The VAT and excise revenue from shopping in Grafton Street goes to the Irish Exchequer as does the PRSI etc on the payroll of the employees. The same is not the case if I shop in the same shop in Northern Ireland. THAT IS MY POINT

I will be off to Asda to stock up on drink in the next few days.....for the simple reason that it is far cheaper to buy it in Strabane than here in Letterkenny.

I think that the whole reason that we're having this debate is that most people in the 'south' don't feel the way you described.

I have heard various shop owners asking people to shop in the 26 counties and to do their bit for the economy. I wonder however, how much of the shops stock is made in the 26 counties? Given that we are being asked to "buy Irish", are they doing the same? With a choice of a retail product from the UK or Ireland, are these shopkeepers ignoring any price differences and buying Irish, or are they going fo the cheapest option in order to keep their profit margins?

Fredthered , if you want cheap drink then Sainsbury's in Derry are even cheaper than ASDA in Strabane. Their own brand Spirits are bought from Smirnoff , Bacardi and Bushmills and rebranded as their own. Their beer is also cheaper and you have a great selection to choose from. Their groceries can be quite pricey though. But if your after cheap drink , hard to beat Sainsbury's in Derry.

Other than Clogher Variety Markets I've never been keen on the cross-border shopping personally. No problem with people doing it though, it works both ways. A lot of people go to France on the ferry to stock up on wine but people never really had any issue with this. As usual its probably a class thing,

People will go where they can buy best. They would be dopes if they didn't.I'd say most of those complaining would be too far away too benefit from the cheaper prices in the north.I can't understand the mentality where you were happy enough to get ripped off when money was more plentiful and didn't really complain. Now things are tighter you only now see how you were being treated.Pressure should be put on the government to regulate prices and factors which contribute to higher prices. It's a self-made mess.

498884 what are peoples opinions on cross border shopping? Im totally against it and would not shop North of the border as a matter of principle. what chance have shopkeepers this side of the border got especially with the current exchange rate

Completely agree Millhouse I don't do it on a matter of principle either. In fact I was talkin last week to someone who went up there for the first time and was very dissapointed, because she says aside from drink everything else was in or around the same price allowing for the exchange of course. So it would apear to be a bit of a myth.As usual.

u people who do not want 2 shop in the north must have plenty of money.

the shops for years have been ripping people off .now they are people out there who are on the breadline .

what do u think they should be be kept been ripped off , i do not think so .
they go for the best deals 2 keep their heads above water . they are people who simply do not have a choice

A southern contractor - Sisk have just won a Roads job in the north for £400m.
The won the job cause they were the best qualified. Everyone on this island should be able to work and shop where ever they choose.
Hopefully loads of there workers will keep their jobs because of this. So the guys from Omagh are more than entitled to sell their milk whever they choose.
