Cross border shopping

what are peoples opinions on cross border shopping? Im totally against it and would not shop North of the border as a matter of principle. what chance have shopkeepers this side of the border got especially with the current exchange rate.

You cant blame people for doing it. Do people actually think that if the southern shops could buy their stock at the same rate that they wouldnt do it? Give me a break... Is there any difference between people taking their business to the north and companies taking their business to asia?

i'm afraid its everyman for himself. If someone can fill there car with a load of shopping at half\third of the price then why wouldnt they? Didn't hear too many complaints when northern folk came south to fill their tank up!

I must admit I did not realise the extent of it.

On the way to Croke last Saturday for the Rugby, I could not beliebve the tailback at Newry with traffic from the "south".

And at the end of the day, to me politics is about bread and butter issues rather than daft nationalism or patriotism like the BNP and such, so, I imagine I would be shopping in Newry if I lived in Dundalk.

Can people that travelling a few hundred miles actually save that much money? considering petrol money and paying for dinner is it that much cheaper?

I do a lot of my shopping on the net, I suppose its kind of the same as shopping in the north as some of it goes to the same taxman. Its pretty logical why people do it though. A few weeks ago a bought an item which costs €40 in a shop here of that shop's website for £25/ €27. There can only be one winner in this contest.

quite a simple question for you. Its economics. If your country devalues its currency what happens to a country that doesnt?

My house is less than a mile from the Derry/Donegal border and I always buy my petrol accros the border in Bridgend. It's still margainly cheaper for Northern drivers to buy their fuel in the 26 counties. As for shopping in Newry , Enniskillen , Belfast & Derry etc etc. Why wouldn't people who are getting it hard not drive across the border and make significant savings on their shopping?? Northern people would most likely do the same if the situation was reversed.

People from north of the border come south th Clones, Lifford and Dundalk for petrol and diesel and that doesnt bother people. Why would it? Its good trade for southern filling stations and irish coffers.
Good luck to anyone who can save a few bob in tough times.
People who are against it have a vested interest, ie greedy southern shopkeepers

I live in the south but work for a british based organsiations and I am paid in sterling. I try to support lcoal shops here but I have a family to look after so our main foray for food is up to Enniskillen. A neighbour to me hit the nail on the head. When the good times were here businesses didn't think twice about charging big prices for everything and now we are supposed to subsidise them in the lean times.

You can't blame people when one christmas gift for example an ipod is 40 euro cheaper.

It was on Joe Duffy last week - a samsung 42" LCD TV was EUR1400 more expensive in the south.
The VAT rate cant explain that. Its greed.
