jesusjones im not contesting the fact that clarke not gettin one is a disgrace - because it categorically is , howeer that is no excuse for any of us to run down the lads who did get chosen because of the fact they did oin merit( at the trials) even though in my own personal opinion that is a flawed system

Just to add to the controversy about Ciaran Clarke not getting an all star, I see an article in the gaelic life paper this morning on the subject and in it we are told that Ciaran Clarke scored 1-10 from play at the first trial. Can some of you belfast men now explain to me how 4 st. marys men got all stars when Clarke is clearly the best player in the mageean and he scored 1-10 from play at the trails. There has always been a st. marys bias in the ulster colleges

I counted at least 7 Down minors who went to the trials, whom of which, most started. To hear that none of them got any. & for Derry, an Ulster Minor Championship runner-up team, none of which got any either. Frankly it is a disgrace.

"well u cant deny that most of the best players in ulster are from antrim" smiley I think that is a very juvenile and ill informed comment. are u sayin that the rest of Ulster haven't got good enough players to compete 4 those positions. i find that hard to believe and i think that is a slur on the rest of Ulster. but i still av to offer my congratulations to the lads who got 1 even if people think it is a flawed system.

There is no doubting the fact that young Clarke is a great hurler (well I've never actually saw him play, but I trust the people who I've talked to) however, all this talk is downgrading the players that actually did receive awards. Is it their fault that they were put forward and selected? Being from Belfast I have seen most of them Belfast lads play, and they would all deserve to be selected IMO. I'm not saying instead of the boys that weren't selected, maybe they could be accommodated somewhere else in the panel. We'll see how good these players are with their clubs, counties, schools and universities over the next few years anyway.

jesusjones the st marys representatives on the team were a corner back half back centre back and midfielder - clarke is a forward as you say ( and yes it is a disgrace he didnt get one) therefore his omission cannot be compared to the st marys lads who play in different positions , in my view this just illustrates you have a grudge against belfast hurling in general , wind your neck in

its getting very heated. I think everyone has come to the conclusion that Clarke should have got one. ok

well JesusJones there is a reason for any so called "bias" towards st marys, as far as i know through looking at the various websites and as far as i can remember seeing them in All Ireland Colleges tournaments, they are the most successfull Colleges Hurling team in Ulster. The Record speaks for itself! Though they havent received the most allstar awards that record is currently held by St Patricks College Maghera!

shocked ryan duckett from st marys didnt get one. this seems to have become a "why clarkie didnt get an allstar" debate. If he wasnt good enough at the trials then he shouldnt get one, the system is unfair but at least it applys to everyone. St marys are one of the most dominant forces in ulster collegs history and all their selected all-stars deserve them. You have 3 players who are to play in an ulster minor final soon. Their captain, who was st marys best player in the final. And the antrim minor captain.

Is Clarke still at school next year? Will he get another chance?

as a matter of fact st marys have now overtaken maghera in the allstar numbers with them collecting 4 allstars 3 years in a row. add this to all the championships that came to belfast this year it looks that the day of belfast domination is coming!! btw the clarke clearly should have got an allstar but the system applies to everyone. There wasnt this much stink kicked up about mcveigh in the football last year when he didnt get one after destroying every team he played against. This is a much higher achievment than clarke scoring 1.10 against a fairly average at best marys team. But wait sure hes from belfast....all you north antrim people wouldnt recognise belfast talent if it came up and slapped you on the face. something many belfast men would love to do might i add!!

The all stars were discredited years ago; remember one lad got an all star for hurling recently, doesnt play hurling for any club (didnt play competitively since u14 level) was in a grammar school in co down that doesnt have a hurling team and asked to go to the trails; hey presto gets an all star award, what does that tell you and what does it say to the other boys!!
