Anyone able to help me on the " Another Feast Of Irish Folk " thing? kingpuck71 (Derry) - Posts: 691 - 25/11/2009 10:03:25 493474 Link 0 |
As musicians in the strictest sense the Dubliners would be better , although Tommy Byrne from the Tones has a fantastic voice. I like both groups and I've been well known to lash out a few rebel songs when I've a few on me. dubupnorth (Dublin) - Posts: 1897 - 25/11/2009 15:13:58 493747 Link 0 |

Ridiculous thread title becasue there is no comparison anyone who says the Wolfe TOnes are better than the Dubliners needs their heads examined. The Dubliners had two of the greatest musicians Ireland ever produed in any genre with Barney McKenna and Luke Kelly. I heard Philip King introduce a vocal by Luke on his show one night and it could only describing one person "I put this record on during the week and its a while since i heard it and the voice took me my surprise; such power, conviction, energy and confidence from the voice it really grabs you when you hear it" Four adjectives that totally sumup the voice of Luke Kelly but of course nothing beats actually listening to it. Barney McKEnna is a genuis on the tenor banjo, his solos and backing are like a song wihtin a song amazing. The Dubliners perfected Irish folk songs to a level that will never be equalled, the groundbreaking achievments is amazing, Irish folkmusic before them was practially non existant. The Wolfe Tones aren't great to be honest, dont get me wrong they are ok for a few tunes but they arent anything better than you would hear down the local on a Saturday night. To comapre them with the Dubliners is nothing short of shear Lunacy and anyone who prefers them to the Dubliners either knows nothing about music or is letting politics judge their musical taste. omaghjoe (Tyrone) - Posts: 1191 - 26/11/2009 00:40:36 494430 Link 0 |

I have two views on the Wolfe Tones. I used to think they were exploiting the troubles for their own financial gain. But loking looking back on it despite some of the comments here they were good singers and musicians and I wonder would they have been bigger commercially if they didn't sign overtly nationalist songs. I don't think it's fair to describe them as sectarian but they certainly would have that type of following in Glasgow. But during a period when the media and policiians where whitewashing Irish history they wrote some great songs along with a few naughty numbers including Admiral William Brown during the Malvinas War. thistle_harps (UK) - Posts: 879 - 27/11/2009 08:00:36 495790 Link 0 |
