I have to say that i enjoy the music of both bands but the Tones just shade it for me. I was reared on a diet on Wolfe Tones music in my younger days and I suppose as a republican they lifted the moral at times. Forgetting to turn down the music in the car at a checkpoint usually resulted in you being held at the roadside for at least the next hour and a half, maybe more. They just didn't seem to appreciate that some said the divil was dead and buried in Killarney....... mugsys_barber (Tyrone) - Posts: 2160 - 22/11/2009 21:50:43 491263 Link 0 |
The Wolfe Tones only appeal to brit hating, rapid republicans, whereas the Dubliners are a proper Irish folk band gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 22/11/2009 22:00:20 491272 Link 0 |

Tones aren't worth mentioning. They are a joke. LoyalRoyal (None) - Posts: 465 - 23/11/2009 10:08:37 491474 Link 0 |
There is a place and a following for every band. Some of the Dubliners stuff was indeed brilliant, and Luke Kelly is a total legend. I've seen both bands over the years and found them both to be enjoyable. Tommy Byrne in his prime had a haunting voice and whilst different to Luke some of his renderings would also make the hair stand on the back of your neck. I accept that the Tones concentration on Ra songs would not be to everyones liking and also in the last few years they are way past their "sell by" date. p.s. I don't normally watch talent shows but there was a traditional singer on last night . A girl from Westmeath I think. Unfortunately for me there was a kids party going on in my gaffe and I couldn't really give it the concentration it deserved. From what little I did hear she sounded absolutely fantastic. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 23/11/2009 11:04:07 491521 Link 0 |
Dubliners by a country mile. Patrque, you speak some rubbish but agree with your sentiments 100% this time. Derry_ledd (Derry) - Posts: 2093 - 23/11/2009 11:29:23 491535 Link 0 |

The "WOlfe Tones" detest Northerners. First met them in "The Castle Vaults Inn" in Salthill in 1974. I was with the Queen's GAA club. As soon as they heard our accents they started, calling us Northern scum, and this a group named after a man who advocated equality for "Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter, so we had to punch and kick the bejabbers out of them, true story. I remember joking in 1994 that the "Tones" would have to disband when the ceasefire was called because Turned out I was right. What really annoyed me was that while they were earning a fortune, and not even good musicians, with crocodile tears about the North, they were living in New York or somewhere. Only those in the North, with no sense of Irish History, and Celtic supporters, like the Tones. I added Celtic supporters because with no trouble in the North the Tones tried to integrate themselves with the Celtic crowd. Luke Kelly, greatest "Folk" singer ever, widely acknowledged as such by everyone. I played folk music all over England, and a fair bit of N.Ireland, and Kelly, and the Dubliners, were legends. They were also musicians, and Barney and John could sit at any session playing melody with maestros. No one in the Tones could even dream about that. The Dubliners were not only a big part in the "Folk" revival but their tunes contributed to the rise of traditional music as well. Many a great banjo player started after listening to Barney. I suppose I am for the Dubliners on this one, just do not mention the others in my hearing. Every Sunday when someone requests something by the tones I launch into my rant. It's not too often we agree Patrique but by god when we do................... fredrickwood (Roscommon) - Posts: 2871 - 23/11/2009 11:42:09 491551 Link 0 |
