claughaun1982, I have my doubts that you have actually read it because your subsequent rant has nothing to do with the book. The book does not attack the work that clubs do. Can you explain why you think its bull? Because if so you can't blame the author for that because he barely says anything at all. The book is made up of interviews with our very own players, ex players, ex caoches, players and ex players from other counties and various county board officials. I have a feeling you have county board involvement or know someone because a lot of people in the book are unhappy with how the county board conducts itself. If you call it bull, then you are saying that the views of so many of our great players like Kirby and Carey are bull. With all due respect to you the people interviewed in this book are all better placed to comment on Limerick hurling than you or anyone on this site as the people in this book have been right at the heart of Limerick hurling.... I don't think you have read this book. Explain how "its the last thing the county needs"? Thats a very melodramatic statement you have made. If anything it will do the county good, it could act as a catalyst for change in how certain things are done, particularly at board level. But until you explain the specific issues you have with this book, thus proving you have actually read it, I'm not going to believe one word of what you say about this book. Also, Leech; you state that you "feel that a lot of what Henry Martin writes is dead on". I would disagree because he doesn't actually write that much at all! His input was to interview people and present it almost as a discussion about Limerick hurling from the people who have been at the heart of Limerick hurling. Thats great Claughaun... Underage is Flying espec the u16's... But when the underage start growing up, and they are senior and the club get other players in from different places around... They (the club) forget about who stuck by them and thats what is the same in the book.. Needs to be sorted from grassroots up all over the gaa.. limk09 (Limerick) - Posts: 71 - 27/10/2009 10:55:25 467117 Link 0 |

Went into a book shop the other day and had the intentions of buying the book. that is until i saw the price of the book .. £20... its not really the twenty euro that bothered me but the price in comparision to other sports books for sale..Brain Coady Donal Og and other books at less than henry's book. i'd like to add im no way tight with money and i still bought 3 books ... Brian coady 17.99 ,Jockey Mike Fitzgearld's at 8.99 and Gazza's at 9.99.. Anyone with similar views..... ****hot (Limerick) - Posts: 36 - 27/10/2009 11:48:27 467170 Link 0 |

The book is not overpriced at 20 euros and if anything is excellent value. Based on other books he could have charged 25euros. Brian Cody gives us 258pages on recycled paper and was probably much cheaper to publish. Henry Martins book gives us 408pages on the best quality glossy paper that I have seen on a GAA book. I think the claughaun 1982 comments are way out of order. In no way are the clubs criticised in the book and the book isnt as negative as people are saying. Theres great stuff and memories in the book from the heartbreak in games that we have forgotten. Sandy_Lane (Limerick) - Posts: 32 - 28/10/2009 14:33:58 468527 Link 0 |
I finished the book last night. An excellent and most compelling read. To think there are morons around the County saying its full of lies. Its all from the horses mouths all 114 of them. bookie (Limerick) - Posts: 438 - 28/10/2009 15:33:06 468604 Link 0 |
I finished it last night (about 4.30am).....its just a great read from start to finish ,and I've followed the team for 30 years! There is no so-called 'washing the dirty laundry' cos actually very few names (none actually) are mentioned in relation to the so-called drinking culture and in the end it appears to have been a storm in a tea-cup. But the media have to sell papers so there is an amount of spin that naturally emanates from this type of book. In relation to personal comments about the author, I cant see how this has bearing on the book ,since the total amount of personal imput is barely a paragraph!! liam73 (Limerick) - Posts: 13 - 28/10/2009 18:38:46 468874 Link 0 |
I was talking to a county board officer last night and he told me that he thinks its a great book but that he is not allowed to say that. Slowly but surely as more people read the book from cover to cover, justice is being done for the book. There are great stories in the book. Where else would you read about Limerick and Cork in 1984 or in 1987. How about Jimmy Carroll being concussed in a challenge game. How about Terrence Kenny being marked by the Offaly Bus Driver in 1992 and getting his place on the team because of it. How about the row in the club game between Tom Ryan and Richie Bennis in 1974 a couple of weeks before the All Ireland final. Any Limerick supporter that dismisses this book without reading it is not a true Limerick supporter. The problem with this county is that there are too many establishment men who are refusing to acknowledge that the book exists. Sandy_Lane (Limerick) - Posts: 32 - 29/10/2009 11:34:54 469516 Link 0 |
