I was in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick last Saturday where it was U12 hurling finals day.It was magnificent.Over 1100 young hurlers took to the field with games commencing at 10.00 in the morning and the last of the games finishing up at around 6.30.This was the culmination of a season of games. The games were fantastic and to say the kids enjoyed themselves would be an understatement. This is the way forward, improve each year and make this an annual event.

The interest just isnt there in Derry as a whole. You get pockets of interest but thats it. Most hurlers are dual players and football will always take precedent.
Its a football county and the county board are happy enough for that to be the case from now to eternity.

re bosch, well if thats true, its a shame!Kids in Derry are obviously being denied the opportunity to play a truely fantastic Irish game.I know that the football version of last saturdays hurling games is to be played in the next week or two,at least there is choice, and i'm no fan of football. And it was 1200 not 1100 U12 hurlers in the Gaelic Grounds and over 3000 supporters passing thru the turnstiles . It really was a sight, and the standard of hurling was brilliant.

Interesting idea to allow weaker counties combine, might be worth a shot. In another thread I advocated allowing players who don't make the cut in stronger counties to play for weaker ones via a draft system should they chose to do so. Essentially this might see Cork fellas playing for Kerry, Kilkenny men for Carlow, etc - Again might be worth a shot. I really do feel that giving kids a top quality team to support in the top flight of hurling is essential. I completely agree that that is what's largely responsible for the growth of rugby in this country.

Kids need to be surrounded by friends who hurl in order to keep on hurling. The game is a little more difficult than football at first and the temptation to throw away the hurley and do something in which the basic skills are easier (football, soccer, rugby etc) will always be there unless the peer group are hulers. The importance of a solid club base shouldn't be underestimated. But a solid club can only be built from interested kids. Whilst I know it is near sacrelige to suggest it, I am of the opinion that kids interest is best enhanched by the intercounty game. In other words, a healthy intercounty scene will lead to a healthier club scene.

Either way, as has already been said, we need to do something radical unless we want to watch the same 4/5 teams (or perhaps even less) win the next 50 AI's.

Just think of the fun we could have thinking of names for these amalgamated Counties. We could have a competition with the best names winning an lovely big football to throw darts at. any suggestions: what about Laolow or DoneMagh

Probably wouldn't work because there too far apart, but Carlow and Cavan - Caravan.
I'd like if this idea was considered by the central council, seperating the county boards would be a good idea too but a lot of county boards would be just diminishing there power. How many counties have seperate boards? They are seperate in Galway, where else

The possibilities are endless - Kerry + Derry = Ker-ry or Der-ry Wexford + Waterford = Wex-ford or Water-ford or my favourite Westmeath + Meath = West-meath

Send a few Kilkenny hurlers up to Donegal in a helicopter, take a few photos and send them home never to be seen again!

And the Kerry footballers could go to weaker footballing counties such as Kilkenny, Tipp or Dublin to try and teach them to better too.

I agree with "voice of reason" from Mayo but the trouble is in Kilkenny they don't wait to leave hospital, they are born with a hurley in their hands !

I thought that weak counties were being twinned with stronger counties and this would include training sessions with top players. The non-Ards Down team was paired with Galway as I remember. Nobody else hear about this?

ban football then some people might actually know there is a game called hurling some people say in tyrone ,mayo ,meath, kildare , louth, tyrone, sligo, armagh, derry, roscommon, and instead of setting up committees to look into it they should actually try and do something

750000 fermanagh footballers got last year wat did they win....all fermanagh need more hurling coaches. If the county board put half the time and money into the hurling you would see things happen..

"And the Kerry footballers could go to weaker footballing counties such as Kilkenny, Tipp or Dublin to try and teach them to better too".

We still have won more Football All-Irelands than Tyrone ;) and our "weak" football team is not that bad considering we are a hurling county. If the football counties put the same effort into their hurling teams as we do to our football team we'd have a far stronger hurling championship and this thread wouldn't be needed.
